‘She’s going to call them today. She really thinks something might have happened to him.’ The messages she’s sent Abby this morning are a testament to that. ‘I tried to tell her that’s not likely, but she’s convinced he wouldn’t have left her without a word.’

Rob scratches his cheek. ‘Well, she does know him better than anyone.’

Nausea swirls around her body. He is wrong. Sienna doesn’t know Greg better than anyone.

‘Aren’t you going to be late?’ She needs to stop Rob talking about this.

He checks his phone. ‘Yeah. I’d better go.’ He rushes over and kisses her. She can taste the coffee on his lips. ‘I nearly forgot – would you mind popping something over to Mum and Dad’s for me? It’s the hard drive for their computer. I took it last week to fix for Dad and he needs it back. I completely forgot this weekend. Sorry. Is that okay?’

This is her payback from the universe for telling Sienna she had to do shopping for Lillian and Eric yesterday. At the best of times she dreads visits to their house, especially alone, but right now the thought is unbearable.

She can’t resent Rob for asking her to run this errand. It’s not his fault that he’s unaware of the tension that exists between her and Lillian. His mother is a skilled actress: a loving and doting mother-in-law while in company, hoarding her venom to spit at Abby when no one’s around to hear her vicious words.

Abby puts up with this for Rob’s sake; she refuses to damage his relationship with his mother by revealing her true colours to him. Especially when to him she is nothing but a kind, loving mother. A clash of personalities, she considers it, and she’s never dwelt on it. This was easy to do when her mum was alive, but now Lillian’s callousness is getting harder to ignore.

‘Of course I will.’ Abby forces a smile.

‘Great, thanks. See you later.’

She stands by the window and watches him leave, a suffocating panic rising within her. What the hell is she going to do?

When she traces things back, Abby will see that everyone has a part to play in this, and Rob’s parents are no exception. Lillian and Eric are so far removed from Sienna that it is impossible for Abby to see her mother-in-law as anything other than a frustrating cross she has to bear. Yet Lillian is about to become instrumental in what happens.
