They spend two hours in this coffee shop, and by the end of it, Sienna has agreed to go to Abby’s house the following Monday. She needs to get a feel for her place and exactly what she wants to do with it.

Sienna is buzzing when she gets home that night, the possibilities that lie ahead are a drug infused in her body. She’s landed a design job, something that will help her kick-start her business, and she’s excited to let Greg know. She’s not going to be a negative statistic – with her career or her marriage. She’s going to make everything work.

As he said he would be, Greg is still up, sitting at the kitchen island, staring at his laptop screen. He hasn’t heard Sienna approach, and she hovers by the door, watching him. If she could freeze this silent moment, then she would; as soon as either of them speaks then it will all be ruined.

After a moment she breaks the silence. ‘Guess what? I’ve got a job!’ She heads over to him and plants a kiss on his cheek. He smells nice, she thinks. He always does, no matter what time of day it is.

A look of relief crosses Greg’s face. She’s not sure whether it’s about her having a job or because she’s not asking him what he was doing. ‘That’s brilliant,’ he says, and the smile appearing on his face reminds her of the man he was when they first got together. The effort he used to put in. He’d made her feel as though she was important to him, that he didn’t want to be without her. ‘Which hospital?’ he asks.

She frowns. ‘No, it’s not a hospital job, it’s a freelance design job for a woman in my Pilates class.’

Greg’s smile quickly vanishes, and the disappointment emanating from him feels like knives piercing her skin. ‘Oh. Okay.’

She pulls out one of the bar stools and sits beside him. ‘It’s proper paid work, Greg. And this is good for my business. Something to show prospective clients. I’ve got to start somewhere, haven’t I?’

He stares at her, silently, for too long. ‘I know. You’re right. I’m sorry. I don’t want you to think I’m not supporting you.’

Yet this is exactly what she does think. She’s about to say so until Greg speaks again. ‘Tell me about this woman. What is it she wants you to do?’
