Sienna rushes downstairs and opens the door before Holly reaches it, pulling her inside as soon as she’s close enough. ‘I really need to talk to you,’ she says. ‘Come upstairs. I need to show you something.’
The smile on Holly’s face vanishes, quickly replaced with a frown. ‘Sienna, what’s happened? Is Jackson okay?’
‘Sorry, yes, he’s fine. He’s at his friend’s house. Luca.’
Holly lets out a deep breath. ‘Okay. Thank goodness. So what’s going on?’
‘It’s best if I show you.’ Sienna leads the way upstairs, with every step she climbs hoping there’ll be some sort of explanation, that Holly will pick up on something she herself has missed.
‘What a mess,’ Holly exclaims when she follows Sienna into the spare room. ‘I’m so sorry. I’m always on at him to tidy things up, and actually he’s usually good at home so I’m surprised—’
‘Jackson didn’t make this mess. I did.’
Holly stares at her. ‘Oh. Why? What’s going on, Sienna?’
Sienna sits on the edge of the bed. ‘I was going to do Jackson’s washing so all his clothes were clean before you picked him up. But then I found that in his rucksack.’ She points to the debit card, which she’s placed on the bed.
Holly frowns, takes a step towards it. ‘What is it?’
‘I think you should have a look.’
She picks up the card, turning it over just as Sienna did earlier. The colour drains from her face as she takes in the name on the card. ‘I don’t understand. What’s one of Greg’s cards doing in Jackson’s things?’ Her eyes widen. ‘Oh no, please don’t tell me he’s been stealing money.’
Sienna shakes her head. ‘That’s the debit card that was used in Brighton. Only it wasn’t Greg who used it. It was probably whoever…’ She trails off, unable to close her sentence.
Holly stares at her, then back to the card. ‘No, it can’t be. I don’t understand. What’s it doing here?’
Sienna almost can’t say the next part; how awful it will be for Holly to hear more. ‘I found it in Jackson’s rucksack. I was hoping you could help me work out how it got there.’
The frown remains on Holly’s face and when she shakes her head, the sunglasses that have been perched on top of it topple to the floor. ‘But… I don’t understand. There’s no way Jackson had that; he couldn’t have.’ She glances around the room as if the answer is written here somewhere. Sienna feels sorry for her. ‘He must have found it somewhere in the house,’ Holly continues.
‘No. No, he didn’t. I promise you – I found it just now in his rucksack when I was pulling out that red T-shirt over there.’
