‘Okay. You’re right.’ He stares at his hands, clenching and unclenching them. ‘I’m so sorry. I… I’ve been kind of following you a bit for months. Since you moved to London. I… I know it’s wrong in every way, but I just needed to be near you. I know that’s bad enough, and taking the photos makes it even worse. I can’t explain why I did that – I think I just needed to have them so I could feel close to you when I was back in Ipswich.’ He reaches for her hand, but she pulls away. ‘If I’d known we’d be together again, I would never have done it. I just needed something to hold on to, and this was the next best thing to having you. I never thought for a second you’d take me back.’
Abby is incredulous. ‘You stalked me. That’s insane. At any point you could have just called and spoken to me. You were the one who said we couldn’t be together.’
He hangs his head. ‘I know. I’m not proud of any of this.’
‘You followed me to the park that day I met Greg. You saw us together. You thought we were having an affair.’
He nods. ‘That’s what it looked like. I wasn’t close enough to hear you or see your facial expressions clearly. It just looked like you were having a cosy chat. It’s only when you told me he was blackmailing you I realised I’d been wrong.’
‘You admitted you were jealous of him, because I’d spent the night with him.’
‘I know.’ He turns away, stares through the window.
‘Did you kill him?’
His head shoots up, his eyes wide with horror. ‘No! Of course not! Why would I do that? I didn’t even know him.’
‘You said you were jealous of him. You must have followed me when I went to his house after the park.’
‘What? No, I didn’t. I went back to Ipswich; I swear to you. So you went to his house afterwards?’
She ignores his question. ‘I’m going to the police after this.’ Her hand clutches her mobile phone. ‘I just want you to tell me the truth. I’m sick of lies. Everyone’s lying. You need to tell them what you did, and deal with the consequences.’
‘You can’t really believe that I’d take someone’s life? Please, Abby, tell me this is some kind of test?’
‘Brighton,’ she says.
‘What are you talking about?’
