Despite them being strangers, Abby goes over to her and puts her arm around her. ‘I’m so sorry.’

‘Well, this is strange. I can normally talk about her now without falling to pieces.’

‘I think us being here is probably a bit of a shock,’ Abby assures her.

‘She wanted to be a nurse,’ Kerry says, smiling. ‘She would have made a brilliant one. She really cared about people. I’m a single mum, so life hasn’t always been easy for us, but Leela and I always looked after each other. I wasn’t often ill, but if I ever had flu or anything, Leela would get me cups of tea and really take care of me. That’s the kind of person she was.’

Kerry sits down again, and Abby does the same.

‘Do you mind me asking why she was seeing a gynaecologist?’ Sienna says.

‘She had severe endometriosis. Needed lots of surgery to try and remove it, but it kept coming back, growing more. She was in pain at least once a month, but she just got on with it and rarely complained. Your husband was a remarkable surgeon.’

‘Yes, he was,’ Sienna agrees.

‘Do the police know what happened to him?’

‘Not yet. I’m sure they will soon, though.’ She glances at Abby.

‘Okay, so are you going to tell me why exactly you need to know about Leela?’

‘Did she have a boyfriend that you know of? Anyone significant in her life?’

Kerry frowns. ‘Nobody she talked about. She wasn’t really interested – she was more concerned with what she wanted to do with her life. She’d done A levels but couldn’t decide whether to go to university first then train to be a nurse or whether to just go straight into training. Why do you ask?’

Abby watches Sienna. She knows the plan is to reveal that she suspects Greg and Leela were having an affair, but now that they’re here – face to face with the woman who’s lost her daughter – she wonders if Sienna is finding this harder than she thought it would be.

‘I have to be honest with you,’ Sienna says. ‘I think your daughter was having an affair with Greg. Years ago. Before I even met him. I’m his second wife, so I’m not here for any conflict – Greg was married to someone else at the time.’

‘Oh God,’ Kerry says, burying her face in her hands. ‘I never thought this would come out.’

Abby holds her breath. This is more than they could have expected. ‘What’s that?’ she asks.

‘Leela never said anything, but I saw them once. It was really late one night, and I heard the front door shut. I rushed to the window, and I saw her getting into a car. Your husband was driving, and when she got in, they were… kissing each other.’ She turns to Sienna. ‘I’m sorry.’
