‘You’re an attractive woman, Abby. Maybe I wanted him to try, at least, and then I could walk away from him, knowing he didn’t deserve me. That would have been enough. It would have been all I needed to know.’
Abby is silent while she tries to make sense of this. Then it hits her. ‘So you used me as some kind of experiment. All of us were just pawns to you.’
‘No. I know it seems like that, but it wasn’t a calculated move. I was just acting on impulse. Trying to push Greg. I’m sorry.’
‘Well, look what happened because of that night.’ As soon as she’s said it, Abby wants to take it back. Whatever Sienna has done, her husband is dead; she needs no more punishment. Especially when it’s clear that Greg wasn’t the man she thought he was.
‘We need to stop fighting, Abby,’ Sienna says.
‘That’s what I want more than anything.’
She shakes her head. ‘No. You don’t understand. We’re never going to be friends, not after everything, but we’re in this together, aren’t we? Because if neither of us did that to Greg, then who did? It’s clear that you don’t want to go to the police with the truth, and neither do I, so what the hell are we going to do? How will we feel safe until we know who did that to him?’
Sienna has been constantly on Abby’s mind since their meeting in the park. It was hours ago, and she’s at home alone now, yet she still feels her presence, as if she is still right by her side. Sienna has planted a seed in her head and no amount of reasoning with herself can make her feel better. This was supposed to be the end of her and Sienna; she’s meant to be moving on, but now they are inexorably linked, tied by the secrets and lies they’re both sinking in.
On the kitchen table, her phone vibrates. It’s a message from Rob.
I’m outside. Can we talk?
She’s used to the flood of guilt that overwhelms her every time she thinks of Rob, or hears from him, but this time it’s stronger. It shouldn’t have been like this – Rob texting her from outside his own house as if he has no right to come in, to use his own key. Yet above all that, she knows she’s done the right thing, even though she’s gone about it the wrong way.
He smiles for a second when she opens the door, and for that brief moment they are the people they were before. The smile quickly fades; he’s happy to see her, but he doesn’t want to be.
‘This is still your house,’ she says. ‘You can come in any time.’
