She hasn’t heard from Rob since he came to her house on Monday evening. Three days have passed, hours in which she’s barely existed. Sienna wonders if there’s any such thing as an unperson, because that’s what she feels like. She might still exist in her physical form, but inside she’s hollowed out.
DC Roberts has been the only one in regular contact with her; each time he calls there’s no news, and she’s begun to wish he wouldn’t bother. Not until he’s found Greg. Even Marty’s only texted a couple of times since she saw him that morning at the hospital. She understands this. There’s not much anyone can say.
She’s in her bedroom, looking out of the window, when a silver Audi pulls into her drive. Rob’s car. She’s opened the front door before he even steps out, and waits on her doorstep, the pavement sending a chill through her bare feet.
‘Are you okay?’ she asks as he walks towards her. It’s Friday morning, and he should be at work by now.
‘It’s me who should be asking you that.’ The thin smile on his face as he says this makes her want to hug him. She knows how much this man loves Abby. Is it more than she loves Greg? Different, perhaps.
‘I’m… doing okay. Shouldn’t you be at work?’
‘Yes. I called in sick. I’ve never done that before.’
This doesn’t surprise her; the second she met Rob she could tell he wasn’t one for flouting rules.
‘You’d better come in, then.’
‘I’ve got to stop coming round like this,’ Rob says once they’re inside. ‘The neighbours will think something’s going on.’
Sienna smiles. ‘And how ironic that we’re actually the ones who aren’t guilty of that.’ She heads to the kitchen, déjà vu coursing through her head, and flicks on the kettle. ‘Is this a coffee kind of chat or do you want something stronger?’
‘Coffee’s fine, thanks.’ He sits down while she makes it.
She asks him if he’s talked to Abby about Greg. She has to. Whether anyone likes it or not, she and Rob are in this together.
‘Actually, you know you said just now that we’re the only ones who aren’t guilty of anything? Well, I’m not sure that’s true.’
Leaving the coffee cups on the worktop, she joins Rob at the table. ‘What do you mean?’ She is already wondering if she’ll regret asking this, but Sienna dislikes being kept in the dark.
‘When I got home last night, Abby was still up. I was ready to confront her and have it out… but then, I couldn’t do it. Actually, that’s wrong. I could have done it – I just didn’t want to.’
