Quinn showing up at the same time Mrs W started terrorising them was too much of a coincidence to ignore. Were they somehow connected? Mrs W wanted revenge and Rosie knew she wasn’t going to rest until she had taken it. Was Quinn going to help her get it? Mrs W had been forced to give up twenty years of her life and she blamed the five of them for it. Now she wanted their lives in return.

Rosie closed her eyes and for a moment she was back in the darkness, the scent of the earth and that awful cool moist air. There had been two of them that last awful night and although there had been tears and moments of panic, knowing they were together made it easier to cope.

At least it had until eventually there had just been one voice and Rosie had realised she was there all alone.

She knew what evil Mrs W was capable of. The cruelty she had shown them as children had been hidden behind a smiling mask, as she lured them in with ice cream and cookies. She was the witch in Hansel and Gretel, the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood, the faceless monster who they had all been warned never to get in the car with.

She had warned Hannah there would be consequences if they ever betrayed her, if they ever told anyone what she had done, but they hadn’t listened. They had told and Mrs W had gone to prison where she had no doubt planned her revenge.

As a child, Rosie had gone from adoring Mrs W to being terrified of her in the course of one night, but as an adult, recalling what truly awful things Mrs W was capable of was even more frightening.

There had been six of them as children, but Miles had died. Now his sister, Jill, was dead and as awful as it was, part of Rosie actually envied her. Jill had nothing to fear. It was those who were left, Hannah, Lauren, Tash and Rosie, who needed to be on their guard.

Eileen Wickham was coming for them and they needed to find out what she was planning. So far, she had just been playing games with them, but soon she would strike and their nightmare would begin again, and Rosie didn’t know if she could survive this time.

‘Have you considered Bill Wickham might be involved or helping Eileen?’

They were back at the table, the dishes mostly empty, though Tank was still keeping a close eye for scraps, and the bottle of wine that Hannah had brought was now open. Liam had persuaded her to have a small glass and she had been nursing it, looking like she wished she could have a top-up.

He was tempted to tell her to stay the night again, but it probably wasn’t the wisest idea.
