As Hannah stared up at them through her tears, she saw that Mrs W was leaning over her and Bill now held a shovel. Her teeth started to chatter in fear.

Why did he have that?

Oh my God. They’re going to bury me.

Hannah started to sit up again, but she wasn’t quick enough. Mrs W pushed something over her, trapping her in the hole. As it clicked into place, Hannah realised it was a clear plastic lid. She could see them through it, but she was now trapped in the box and could only raise her head by just a few inches.

Frantically, she tried to wriggle her arms free of the sleeping bag, though it was difficult with so little room. She finally got one hand free and pushed against the lid. It was jammed shut and there was no way she could open it.

‘Please let me out. Please don’t do this.’

Her breath was steaming up the plastic and she couldn’t see them clearly, though she heard the peal of Bill’s laughter again. It sounded distorted and far away, as did Mrs W’s voice when she spoke.

‘None of your friends know you’re in here, so I suggest you take your punishment like a good girl. If not, I might not let you out, then you’ll be down here all alone for ever.’

Hannah was crying harder now. She couldn’t help it. And when she didn’t think things could get worse, something heavy thumped on top of the plastic lid.

It took her a second to realise it was a shovel full of dirt. Followed by another, then another.

They were… they were burying her.

That was when she started screaming.

No longer here. Can’t hurt you.

It was just a hole in the ground, and yes, she was remembering, but truthfully, she had never forgotten that awful night.

As a kid she had been terrified. Frightened that Mrs W would leave her, scared that she would run out of air. Of course, she was too young to realise that a tube had been fed into the box so she could breathe.

They had kept her buried in the ground for what felt like hours, though it was actually much less time than that. It was still dark when they had let her out and Mrs W escorted her back to her friends. They were still asleep, though Tash had woken as Mrs W put Hannah’s sleeping bag back on the ground. Of course Mrs W had a story ready, claiming Hannah had needed the loo and become disorientated. She had always been prepared and Hannah knew better than to call her out.
