In a way, she understood why she had. It was the trauma. It had made her weak. But Hannah didn’t need him. He had deceived her once and he would do it again. It had always been Hannah and Rosie against the world. And Hannah would come to realise that it still was.
The danger was still out there. The police might have arrested Bill, but he hadn’t confessed to where his mother was, saying he didn’t know. He was playing games with them. Of course he knew. Mrs W was behind all of this. Why else would Bill have waited until she was released from prison before waging his campaign of terror?
He wasn’t telling them because Mrs W wanted to finish what he had started. There were three of them left and Tash, Rosie, and Hannah needed to watch their backs because Mrs W wasn’t done with them by a long shot.
And it sounded mean, because Rosie was genuinely fond of her, but Tash was on her own now. Rosie wanted to help her, but she couldn’t split herself in two. Besides, Tash had Sam. Right now, Rosie needed to look after herself and Hannah.
She glanced over at her best friend now, curled up on the sofa watching romcoms, Tank at her feet, and her heart swelled with love. Hannah was so important to her and Rosie would do anything to protect her. Had Liam not pulled her off Bill, she would have killed him, and perhaps, in truth, she wouldn’t have regretted it.
It was a day of treats, Rosie had declared. A special day of all of Hannah’s favourite things. The foods she liked, her choice of movies, plus some other goodies. Rosie had brought spa masks and her poshest bubble bath, plus two bottles of Hannah’s favourite wine.
Her plan seemed to be working and Hannah actually looked relaxed for the first time since the attack. Every now and again, though, she would get this faraway look in her eyes and Rosie knew she was reliving it all.
She wanted so badly to ease her suffering, knowing exactly what the pain felt like. She had been living with her own for the last twenty years.
Hannah was a good person and she didn’t deserve what had happened to her. It was Rosie’s job now to fix it and make sure Bill and Eileen Wickham could never hurt her again.

Rosie had noticed the change in Hannah’s personality. She looked sad all the time and was reluctant to go to the Wickham farm, but Rosie was too young to really question why. She assumed Hannah was tiring of hanging out with them and even got a little snotty about it at one point. Was she finding them boring?
