It is probably a stupid thing to say because we are on her bed, which means she knows exactly what I am planning to do to her. I am angry and not thinking straight, especially when she manages to sink her teeth into my arm. The pain has me screaming and, without thinking, I release her other wrist as I try to pull my arm free from her mouth.

Somehow that gives her the momentum, because suddenly she is shoving at me and I am falling backwards. I land with a thump on the floor, take a moment to gather myself.

By the time I am back on my feet, Hannah has bolted.

Hannah was barely a second ahead of him and knew what he planned to do to her if he caught her again, so she didn’t allow herself time to consider how wrong she had been about Liam, jumping to conclusions over a cryptic voicemail and a similar name.

There had been no mistaking Bill Wickham when she had seen him. Over twenty years had passed but she had recognised him straight away. She was no longer a vulnerable little girl, but she also understood that he was bigger than her and physically stronger. She had to get away.

As she fumbled with the front door, his arm clamped around her, squeezing and lifting her off the ground.

Hannah kicked out, heard a grunt as she caught bone. She struggled frantically, using her elbows, head, and legs. Any part of her that he didn’t have hold of. As her skull smacked back against his face, she heard a crack, followed by a string of expletives, and she tried to ignore the stab of pain in her head. She stepped hard on his foot, thrashing against him, and finally succeeding in getting him to loosen his grip.

Running into the kitchen, she grabbed the frying pan from the hob, smacking it clean into his face. He stumbled, but it wasn’t hard enough to stun him or knock him out, and he now looked mad as hell.

‘You fucking bitch!’

He rushed at her before she could react, punching her hard in the stomach, and Hannah doubled over in agony, heaving and gasping for breath, as her diaphragm spasmed violently.

‘Not quite so smart now, are you?’

He dragged her up by her hair, pressing her against the wall, and as she cried out in pain, she realised just how much trouble she was in.

‘I’ve been looking forward to getting my hands on you, so how about we have ourselves some fun?’

She didn’t even see his fist the next time, but heard the sickening crack as it landed against her nose, then felt the burning pain. Moments later, her world turned black.
