Liam’s eyes narrowed. ‘She’s in Suffolk, but not Hixton. Where are you going with this, Hannah?’
‘I want you to take me to see her.’
She could see that had thrown him, as she expected it would, and he took a moment to consider her request.
‘Why?’
‘Because you didn’t send those flowers, she did, and I want to tell her to leave me alone.’
‘Why do you think Eileen sent them?’
This time, it was Hannah’s turn to hesitate. She guessed if she wanted Liam to take her, she had to give him the truth. He listened as she told him about the note with the flowers, though his expression gave nothing away.
‘So will you take me to see her?’ Liam Quinn wouldn’t be her first choice of travelling companion, but he was the most logical, because he knew where she was. Plus, he did owe her.
He gave her a measured look. ‘You’re sure you want to go?’
No, of course she didn’t want to. She had to though. Mrs W needed to stop and what clearer way to send that message than by turning up on her doorstep?
‘Yes.’
And I don’t want to go alone.
Hannah didn’t admit to that. The idea of coming face to face with Mrs W after all of these years had dread knotting her belly. She needed someone with her for support.
‘We can go to her house, but I can’t promise she will speak to you.’
‘You don’t have to promise me anything. Just take me there.’
‘Okay. When?’
She looked him straight in the eye. Hoped her nerves didn’t show.
‘Do you have any plans today?’

While Hannah showered and put on clean clothes, Liam familiarised himself with her kitchen, putting on the kettle before hunting in the cupboards for a frying pan and ingredients. By the time, she reappeared, the omelette he was making was turning a golden brown, the air filled with the aroma of cheese and bacon.
Hannah paused in the doorway, the frown on her face suggesting she was a little annoyed at him taking over her flat. ‘What are you doing?’
‘Making you some breakfast.’
‘I never told you that you could use my kitchen.’
‘No, you didn’t. But you look like crap and you need to eat.’
‘I can tell you’re a writer. You have such a lovely way with words,’ she muttered sarcastically, though she didn’t protest too much and he suspected her belly might have something to do with that. If she was anything like him, drinking too much alcohol would have made her hungry.
Her call last night had been unexpected, and the request to see Eileen was yet another surprise. Liam had expected any truce to be more difficult to achieve, though he was grateful for the way in and determined to make the most of it.
