The first spit of rain hit the back of her hand. Another, moments later, landed on her phone screen.

What was it he had said about his mother as they were walking down to the farm?

She’s been absent for a lot of my life

That made no sense. There were photos of Liam with Jennifer. They seemed close, which was at odds with what he had told Hannah.

So if Jennifer was actually his stepmother, who was his real mum?

I don’t have the easiest relationship with my mother.

She’s back in my life now.

No. Hannah’s stomach dropped. it wasn’t possible. Liam wasn’t Eileen Wickham’s son.

Hannah would know. She would recognise him, surely?

Besides, Mrs W’s son was called Bill, so why the different name?

Bill Wickham. William Wickham. Wil… Liam.

Fuck. It wasn’t possible. How could she not have known? He looked nothing like the kid she remembered, but then it had been so long and people changed. At least in their appearance. They didn’t change fundamentally.

‘Hannah?’

She swung around at the sound of her name, the phone dropping from her hand, smashing as it hit the ground, and she immediately thought she was going to be sick.

Liam Quinn stood in the doorway of the farmhouse, his face sinister in shadows and his expression difficult to read, and in his hand he held a knife.

It was mid-afternoon and Hannah wasn’t home yet, which surprised Rosie, as she knew Hannah wouldn’t want to stay in Hixton any longer than possible.

So where was she?

As each minute ticked by, Rosie’s anxiety increased.

Was Hannah okay? What if something had happened to her?

She tried to calm herself as she paced Hannah’s flat, but her overactive imagination was giving way to all sorts of dubious scenarios. Had Mrs W followed her back to Hixton or had she sent Bill?

No, Rosie. Don’t think like that. Mrs W didn’t know she was going there.

But if she was stalking them.

Think, Rosie. Think.

She tried to be productive. First calling Hannah’s mum, Jane, and trying her best to hold her shit together, knowing Jane would want to have a good old catch-up.

‘Rosie, what a lovely surprise to hear from you. I was sorry you couldn’t make it back for the party.’

‘Did you have a good time?’ She had to ask. Knew it would be rude not to. Still, she gritted her teeth as Jane started telling her all about it, as if they had all the time in the world.

‘Is Hannah still there?’ she asked eventually when Jane stopped for a breath.

‘No, they left after breakfast.’

‘Sorry. They?’

They? Who the fuck was they?

‘She brought that nice young man of hers.’

What man? Had Hannah taken Josh?

‘Liam,’ Jane said, before she could ask.
