The guy doesn’t seem suspicious. Maybe early fifties with a greying moustache and shorts. And he is slight in build. If I attack, I am certain I could overpower him. It is too risky though.

Instead I take the letters and the parcel the man hands over, thank him, aware my voice sounds reedy and more high-pitched than normal, then watch him head back to the van.

I wait until the van has disappeared from sight, then I throw the mail in the wheelie bin.

Despite the coolness of the morning, sweat pools in my armpits and on my upper lip, and I think I might throw up.

I made a huge mistake and when Lauren Bell’s body is found, this man is going to be a prime witness.

The police are going to know I have been here and as I quickly make my way down the lane and back to my car, I feel trapped, aware the net is closing in on me.

These games I have been playing have been a huge waste of time. Yes, I have enjoyed a perverse thrill tormenting the little bitches, but it isn’t supposed to end this way.

Keep calm and carry on. That is what those stupid gimmicky signs say. Right now I need to follow their advice. Hopefully the body won’t be found for a bit and I will have time to get my affairs in order, then I can get the hell out of here and find somewhere to lie low for a while.

Jill Goldberg is dead, so is Lauren Bell.

Tash Hogan, Rosie Emerson, and Hannah Freemont need to watch their backs.

Liam didn’t make contact until Friday and although that bothered Hannah more than she cared to admit, there was no way she was reaching out first, not after the way he had abruptly left her flat on Monday.

That decision came with its complications, namely in the shape of her mother. Now Jane Lawrence knew he existed, she was badgering Hannah with messages, all disguised as questions she needed answers to in order for the party to run smoothly, though Hannah knew exactly what her game was.

She had debated saying that Liam couldn’t make it now, but that would bring with it a fresh headache. Besides, she had committed to staying and she couldn’t really drop out now. Somehow she was going to have to face this weekend alone.

Again, like when he had disappeared for his family crisis or whatever it had been, it occurred to her she might not hear from him again. Last time it had been mildly annoying, but given how he had just walked out on with no explanation, plus the fact they had now slept together, it cut a little deeper.
