Tank was staying with them. He wasn’t a guard dog by any stretch, but he would be a comforting presence for Hannah and a deterrent to anyone who might try to harm her.
As Liam left her flat, he quashed down his guilt at leaving her and decided on a plan of action. He was going to Jill and Lauren’s hometowns to satisfy his own curiosity and to try to find answers, but it would be a flying visit as he was anxious not to leave Hannah for too long.
Croydon was the sensible place to start. His stepsister had been the first to die.
He had never been close to Jill. In fact, he had barely known her. That weekend he had visited Hixton, she hadn’t paid him much attention, too busy wrapped up in her friends. And after Miles had died, Liam had seen her at the funeral, but then his mother had pushed him away again. He had never really had the opportunity to get to know her properly.
He met her husband, Adrian, a few days after Jill’s body had been found. Veronica had been hysterical at the news, even though she and Jill barely spoke these days, and Liam had been left with no choice but to go to her. They had both been at Adrian and Jill’s house in Croydon when Lauren Bell had shown up to pay her condolences and for a brief moment, Liam had wondered if he had slipped up. Had Hannah mentioned him to Lauren at all?
Thankfully, she hadn’t reacted when Adrian introduced them.
At least he had an opening in Croydon. Adrian knew him, so would talk to him. Lauren would be trickier, as he had no connection to anyone in Sevenoaks, but he would figure it out. He had always been good at getting answers out of people.
Giving one final glance up at Hannah’s flat, telling himself she would be okay, he climbed into his car. Time to try to figure out what the hell was going on.

When she thought about how close she had come to losing Hannah, it made Rosie hyperventilate. The idea of what would have happened if she and Liam hadn’t shown up scared the shit out of her and it had been such a shock to the system, it had her reassessing everything.
Hannah had always been the strong one. The one Rosie could rely on. She was always there to pick up the pieces or bail Rosie out whenever anything went wrong.
Bill had broken her, though, and now their roles had reversed.
Liam Quinn was doing his bit, she guessed, although it irritated her how he had inserted himself into Hannah’s life. Okay, so she and Liam had reached an agreement of sorts, but she was still annoyed at his deceitfulness. And, in her opinion, Hannah had forgiven him too easily.
