She was lying. Of that he was certain. He just had to figure out what she was lying about.

‘Are you still sure you want to do this?’
Hannah nodded; aware Liam was looking at her. Her focus though was on the grey-painted terrace house across the road, with its black front door and window box filled with half-dead flowers. It was unremarkable, both the house and the street, and there were no doubt dozens, if not hundreds, of almost identical roads and properties dotted around the country. This one was different though. It was where Mrs W lived. The woman who had misshaped their lives.
Okay, so maybe not so much Tash and Lauren’s, they hadn’t been scarred quite so badly. But Jill had lost her brother, while Rosie’s personal life was a mess. And Hannah had put up a wall, warier now of who she could trust.
Things were always scarier as a child. By confronting Mrs W and taking away her power, would she finally be able to move on?
Liam had switched off the engine, Tank waking up from his snooze and clambering around on the back seat, toenails scrapping against the leather and letting out a few unsubtle whines. As he poked his head through the seats, Hannah made a fuss of him, scratching behind his ears and burying her face in the soft fur of his neck. They couldn’t bring Tank all this way without letting him have a walk and she made a deal with herself that once she had spoken to Mrs W, they would find somewhere nice to take him.
After a moment, she heard the click as Liam released his seat belt. Was he planning on coming with her?
‘You can wait in the car,’ she told him, reluctantly releasing Tank.
Was Liam disappointed at that? They had driven all this way. It was difficult to tell from his expression.
‘Are you sure?’
She suspected he already knew she was hiding something, thanks to her slip-up that Eileen may have done more than send flowers, and she was under no illusions that he would be trying to figure out what she was holding back from him. At some point, he might find out what had happened at Rosie’s flat, but Hannah didn’t intend to lead him there. It was better, easier, if he didn’t know. The last thing Rosie needed was him harassing her. It was better if Liam’s attention stayed focused on Hannah.
At least for now.
Rosie still hadn’t surfaced. Hannah had checked her phone half a dozen times during the drive down and although it wouldn’t be the first time Rosie had pulled a stunt like this, it was still a worry.
‘I’m sure,’ she told him.
