Hannah wouldn’t like her prying, but Rosie was only looking out for her.
‘Hello, Josh,’ she snapped back, her tone impatient. ‘Well, have you? Found anything?’
‘I haven’t really had much of chance to look yet. He’s a writer and I’ve glanced over his website and publisher. It all seems legit. He’s had several successful books too.’
Rosie snatched up her wine glass and took a drink. ‘I’m not interested in his writing career. I’ve already looked at his website.’
‘Then what is it that you want me to do?’
She could hear the weary note of impatience in Josh’s tone, and she clenched her teeth in frustration. The man really didn’t get it.
‘What I want you to do is use your contacts and find out what the real deal is with him. I know he’s hiding something.’
By Josh’s contacts, she meant at the solicitors firm where he worked. Surely he knew people and could find a way to cut through red tape to help them get some answers?
‘I’m not a private investigator, Rosie.’
‘I know that, but you must be able to do something.’
‘You know it’s quite possible there is no dirt to find and you’re just jealous because he’s spending time with Hannah.’
‘I am not jealous!’ This was typical Josh. Pushing her buttons and twisting things around to try to make her look a bad person. Besides, he could talk. She had seen his face when Hannah had shown up with Quinn, and he wasn’t happy. ‘I don’t like how he has her hooked. You know what Hannah is like. She doesn’t trust easily, but for some reason, he has managed to worm his way beneath her defences so he can dig into the past. What if he is trouble?’
Josh sighed, loud and exaggerated, as if to make a point, but Rosie knew she had his interest. He was far too overprotective of Hannah and while that normally annoyed her, in this instance she could use it to her advantage.
‘Okay, okay. Leave it with me. I will make a few phone calls and see what I can find out about him.’
That was better.
‘Let me know as soon as you find anything.’
Rosie was convinced there would be something she could use, but she had to act quickly. The deeper Hannah became involved with Quinn, the more difficult it would be to make her see sense.
It was unlike her friend to get duped. Normally she was the one with her head screwed on and Rosie was able to rely on her. There had been countless times that Hannah had helped her out of trouble. Now it was time to return the favour.
