Fifteen minutes passed and he sensed Adrian was getting a little frustrated, though good manners stopped him from asking Liam to leave. He could have pushed it, but he didn’t want to take advantage of a grieving man. He was getting ready to call it quits when he spotted the friendship bracelet sitting in a trinket dish in the spare room. He recognised it immediately, having seen Hannah’s.

‘Oh, that was Jill’s,’ Adrian told him as he picked it up. ‘I found it on the floor. It must have fallen off while she was cleaning. I didn’t think she wore it any more.’

Liam twisted the bracelet between his fingers, saw the frayed cord had snapped.

All of the kids had one. Tash had made them for each member of the Hixton Five. Friendship bracelets. Each piece of string was extendable and had a friendship symbol charm and a tiny initial bead. Hannah’s had a H and Jill’s a J. He looked at it now and blinked, everything inside him going cold.

It was the wrong letter.

‘Does Jill have a jewellery box?’

‘In the bedroom. Why?’

‘Can I see it? Please.’

Adrian shrugged, but led the way.

Jill’s bracelet lay amongst her other jewellery inside the box.

As Liam picked it up, Adrian looked confused. ‘I didn’t realise she had two the same.’

‘She didn’t.’

Liam ran his thumb over the J charm, and pulled his phone from his pocket. He tried Hannah, then Rosie, but both phones went to voicemail.

This wasn’t good. He left messages for them asking that they call him back, knew he needed to get back to Wells urgently.

He understood now, everything starting to make sense.

Bill hadn’t killed Jill or Lauren.

If he was right, the danger came from within the Hixton Five.

Rosie was right. Today had been good for Hannah.

She was still missing Liam, but Rosie had gone above and beyond to make today special for her. When she had first suggested a pamper day, Hannah hadn’t really been interested. The attack had numbed her and she could think of little else. All she wanted was to retreat into her shell and wallow.

Rosie hadn’t allowed her to do that, though, and Hannah was glad. Wallowing was not the way forward and they had spent a lovely day just chatting, watching movies, enjoying pamper treatments, and she was starting to appreciate the little things again. Even taking Tank for a walk hadn’t been too traumatic. She felt safe with him by her side and knew he would look after her, and it was good practice for her, getting out and about. She had been forced to let her doggy charges down again and knew she needed to get back to work as soon as possible, scared her clients might look for someone more reliable.
