‘Are you girls okay? Natasha, I noticed you’re limping?’ Mrs Wickham was frowning as Hannah stepped back so she could see Tash, her eyes widening as she spotted the drying blood on her knee. ‘You’ve hurt yourself. You poor love.’

‘It’s nothing, Mrs Wickham. I fell off my bike, but it’s just a little graze.’

‘You can’t walk home like that, my girl. Come on. Let’s get you in the truck. I’ll take you up to the farmhouse and get that wound dressed for you.’ When Tash looked like she was about to protest, Mrs Wickham added, ‘I have some Cornettos in the freezer if you’d all like one.’

Rosie’s eyes were widening. ‘Strawberry?’

‘Yes, I have strawberry. Chocolate too.’

Both Rosie and Hannah were sold, but Tash still dragged her heels.

‘It’s very kind of you, Mrs Wickham, but I should really go straight home. My dad is going to be mad when he sees what’s happened to my bike.’

‘Have you badly damaged it?’ Mrs Wickham was climbing out of the truck now, taking Tash’s bike by the handlebars and studying the front wheel. ‘You know,’ she said conspiratorially, ‘I reckon my Bill could take a look at this, get it looking brand new again.’

Tash’s eyes widened. ‘Really?’

‘And your dad need never know.’

‘You promise you won’t ever tell him?’

‘I promise. It can be our little secret. So what do you say, girls? Shall we go back to the farm and have some ice cream? I can clean up Natasha’s leg while Bill takes a look at her bike.’

Tash looked at Hannah and Rosie, smiling for the first time since her accident.

‘Okay, let’s go.’

12

Hannah was still asleep when her doorbell rang, starting awake, disgusted with herself when she realised she was still fully dressed and had fallen asleep on the sofa, the almost empty bottle of brandy on the floor beside her.

She knew it was morning from the daylight streaming through her window, but didn’t realise quite how late it was until she looked at her watch: 10:06.

What the hell?

She never slept that late.

But, then again, she never usually knocked back a dozen shots of brandy.

The doorbell rang again, this time followed by knocking. She wasn’t quite sure which sound was worse, both hammering at the pain in her head.

‘Hold on! I’m coming.’

Who the hell needed to speak to her so urgently?

And then she remembered the events of the previous evening – Rosie’s break-in and subsequent disappearance.

She was back.

Moving faster than was advisable for her pounding head, and remembering her twisted ankle the moment her foot touched the floor, she stumbled to the door, not even bothering to check the peephole before she flung it open, ready to lay into Rosie for scaring the crap out of her.
