‘She’s with Liam?’ Rosie failed to hide the incredulous note in her voice. Why the hell was Liam Quinn with her?
‘Have you met him? I’m so glad she’s finally found someone to settle down with.’
‘Yes, I know him.’
What the hell was Hannah playing at? She had taken Quinn to her mother’s anniversary party and introduced him as her boyfriend? Either she had gone mad or she was keeping a lot of secrets from Rosie. The betrayal had her reeling.
She managed to bluff her way through the rest of the conversation, not letting on how shocked she was, and getting off the phone as quickly as she could.
‘You’ll have to come visit, love,’ Jane told her.
Rosie made the right noises in response, but knew there was no way on hell’s earth she was ever going back to Hixton.
After ending the call, she hunted all over Hannah’s flat, looking for the card Quinn had given Hannah. It was possible she had it on her or had slung it out, but Rosie hoped not. If Hannah was ignoring her, then maybe Quinn would answer.
She found the card in one of the kitchen drawers and immediately dialled Quinn’s number.
It went to voicemail and Rosie hung up.
She noticed there was a scribbled address on the card. It must be where Quinn was staying. Maybe he and Hannah had gone back there.
She pocketed the card, then tried Josh’s number. This went to voicemail too.
Damn it? Why wasn’t anyone answering their phone?
Did Josh know Hannah was with Quinn?
Deciding that she was wasting her time waiting around in the flat, she slipped on her jacket and grabbed her car keys. It was a twenty-minute ride to Josh’s. If he wouldn’t answer his phone, she was going to show up on his doorstep, and she didn’t intend to leave until she had some answers.

‘Are you okay?’
Hannah’s eyes had widened and her face had drained of colour. ‘What are you doing with that?’
She was looking at Liam’s hand. The one he realised held the knife.
‘I found it under the bed in one of the rooms upstairs. No idea who it belongs to. Someone probably left it here.’
‘Shouldn’t you put it back?’
‘And risk it falling into the wrong hands? Knife crime is a real issue, you know.’
‘So you’re just going to carry it back to the car like that?’
Liam shrugged. ‘That’s the plan. I’ll hand it in to the police.’ He narrowed his eyes. ‘What’s up with you? You’re behaving really strangely.’
She had been jittery and seemed suspicious before he had gone back in the house and right now she looked like she was going to throw up. Something had happened to spook her; he was certain of it.
