‘Some of the time.’ Liam released her, caught hold of her hand again and pulled her round to face him. ‘So I have tried to conquer my demons. How about we now go and try to conquer yours?’

Hannah looked into his steadying gaze and nodded. It was time to cut Mrs W out of her life.

‘Okay, let’s do this.’

There was something fishy about Liam Quinn, and Josh Cole was certain it had nothing to do with the bristle of jealousy he had experienced when Quinn had shown up with Hannah at her flat.

By jealousy, he didn’t mean he was still in love with Hannah; that boat had sailed a long while ago. He had been in love with her once, desperately so, and when she had finally given in to his pleading for a date, he had felt like the luckiest man in the world. But then they had married and, while he still adored her, they had jointly realised they weren’t compatible in that way. He liked to think it was credit to both of them that they had managed to part amicably and salvage what was a great friendship.

To Josh, Hannah was still as important as family, which is why he looked out for her.

He hadn’t taken Rosie’s concerns seriously at first. Rosie liked having Hannah to herself, so she was always going to put obstacles in the way. She was overreacting and simply looking for a way to cause trouble.

But the book bothered him. Quinn was poking into Hannah’s past and Josh couldn’t believe she was okay with that. Was she really that smitten with the guy? She had always been so private about everything that happened and now here was Liam Quinn wanting to tell the whole world what had happened to her. Was he cosying up to Hannah purely to get her story?

Not that Josh was suggesting Hannah was unattractive. She was gorgeous. Of course, he was biased, but he was certain he wasn’t alone in that opinion. And it wasn’t just a physical thing. She was kind, compassionate, and stronger than most people he knew. But she was also vulnerable, even if at times she didn’t realise it. If Quinn was taking advantage of her, he would have Josh to answer to.

Hannah would kill him if she realised he was interfering, but on this occasion Josh felt he was justified. He was just looking out for her and in order to do that he needed to know more about Liam Quinn.

The guy had experienced plenty of success with his books, but it seemed he liked to keep his life as private as possible. Quite the irony since he was now making a career of poking about in other people’s business, and it had Josh all the more curious. Guarded people tended to have secrets.
