Hannah nodded. ‘I WhatsApped Tash, Lauren, and Jill after the break-in and the flowers. Rosie doesn’t know about the flowers yet. I was worried I might spook her further. Nothing has happened with any of them. They don’t know about last night with the car. Or that Mrs W is missing. I should update them.’

‘You should.’

How would they react to the news that Eileen had vanished? The dynamics of the group intrigued him. The five of them had stuck together as kids, their evidence a crucial part of Eileen’s trial. Did they still have that closeness, that special bond?

He was curious to find out.

Hearing footsteps out on the landing, Rosie threw open the door, expecting it to be Hannah, rolling her eyes in frustration when she saw instead it was everyone’s favourite ex-husband, Josh, standing on the threshold.

‘What the hell are you doing here?’

‘You finally decided to show up then,’ he smirked.

‘What’s that supposed to mean?’ She would have slammed the door in his smug face, but he already had a foot inside Hannah’s flat, irritating Rosie as he stepped inside, shutting the door.

She wanted to remind him that he didn’t live here, but given that she didn’t either and had used Hannah’s spare key to let herself in, she didn’t really have the higher moral ground on that one.

Hannah knew she was coming over. Rosie had just made it earlier than agreed. She would rather be here than in her flat, which was still tainted by the break-in. She had stopped at that little bakery Hannah liked and picked up pastries. It was her way of apologising for disappearing again. She didn’t want Hannah to be mad at her. Her world felt like it was unravelling and she needed her best friend.

‘You know Hannah’s been worried about you.’ Josh stared down at her, his tone patronising. ‘You really need to stop pulling this shit and stressing her out.’

How fucking dare he?

She adopted her best haughty tone. ‘I already messaged her. She knows I’m fine. Anyway, my friendship with Hannah is none of your business, so stop sticking your beak in.’

‘I beg to differ.’

‘No one cares, Josh. Ex means ex for a reason. You’re no longer a part of Hannah’s life and you don’t get to speak on her behalf. You should go.’

Rosie had never been a Josh fan, their personalities clashing from the offset.

‘I think Hannah gets to decide that. Where is she?’

‘She’s out, but she’ll be home soon. I’ll be sure to tell her you stopped by.’

‘No need. I’m not in a rush, so I’ll wait.’

As if to infuriate her, Josh slipped out of his jacket and took a seat on Hannah’s sofa, making himself comfortable.
