‘I miss you, Liam. I love you, son.’

‘I love you too, Mum, and I’ll see you soon.’

Disconnecting the call, he threw his phone down on the table and scrubbed his hands over his face. She no longer acted like the woman he remembered as a child. These days, she was more needy and, dare he say it, fragile.

Tank lifted his head and looked at him with huge, sympathetic, brown eyes.

Taking another drink of beer, he turned back to his MacBook. Time to return his attention to the far more important matter of Hannah Cole.

Hannah had offered for her to stay again, but truth was, Rosie was too agitated.

Hannah had explained about her encounter with Liam Quinn, but it was all so convenient.

Rosie believed Hannah’s story, but didn’t like how Quinn was trying to worm his way in. And his ploy seemed to be working. Hannah might say she was having nothing to do with him, but she was already on first-name terms with him.

It was messing with Rosie’s head and putting her in a bad mood. She needed to get back home and blow off some steam. Ensuring Hannah had everything she needed, she caught a taxi to Fakenham, then a bus back home to Norwich.

Her favourite solution to her problems was alcohol, and the first thing she did when she returned to her flat was pour a large gin and tonic. The second was to go through her phone book for potential drinking buddies.

After making half a dozen calls, she finally struck gold with ‘Action Man Austin’. Everyone in her phone book had a nickname, from Hannah Banana to Jerk Face Josh. Action Man Austin was Rosie’s old gym instructor and, at six foot four with rock-solid biceps, he more than deserved the moniker she had given him.

They took advantage of the late-afternoon warmth, picking an outside table at Rosie’s favourite bistro and laughing and chatting over cocktails, which had been exactly what she had needed, finally able to shut off that dark and unpleasant part of her life, and just enjoy herself.

As the afternoon wore into evening, she decided she was open to losing herself in a night of good sex. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be with Austin. Although she flirted outrageously with him, she knew she would never turn his head. Their preferences were too similar and there had been more than one occasion that they had competed for the attention of the same man.

While Austin lifted her mood, with it just being the two of them, it made it more difficult to pull. Everyone assumed they were a couple.

With no prospective shag in sight and Austin needing to head home, they finally called it a night.
