  72. About Boldwood Books

You liked that blonde one, didn’t you? Hannah. That’s her name. Remember the look of disgust on her face when she saw you that day?

I bet you would like to teach her a lesson or two.

She could tell he was getting more and more worked up each time she brought it up.

Good.

Bill would do anything for her. But she wanted him to believe this was all his idea.

The sensible thing would have been to ask the taxi to wait.

Stupid, Hannah. Stupid.

Her head had been full of questions and she hadn’t been thinking straight, assuming Liam would be at the Airbnb. So no, she hadn’t thought it through, which was why she was now standing on the doorstep of his rental, the taxi gone.

What a wasted journey.

And where was Liam? It was a Wednesday night. Was he out working?

Of course she shouldn’t have assumed he would be in. Just because her evening plans involved hanging out in her flat, it wasn’t the same for everyone else.

She had knocked a couple of times, but knew he wasn’t here as she hadn’t heard any sign of Tank. Maybe he was out walking the dog, but his car had gone. Why would he have needed to take Tank in his car when there was all this open space?

Resigning herself to the fact she’d had a wasted trip, she debated her options.

She could call another taxi, but she would have to wait around for it to arrive, or she could walk. It was probably only fifteen minutes back to her flat, though her ankle could be an issue.

Well, that and the fact the house was in the middle of nowhere, so the walk back would take her down country lanes.

She didn’t want to be a baby about it, but it was almost dark and just a little bit creepy, and the idea of walking home didn’t exactly fill her with confidence.

Damn you, Liam Quinn. Why did you pick somewhere so isolated?

Where the hell was he?

Maybe she should call him. He might be back soon.

As she reached for her phone, the silence was broken by the sound of a car engine, headlights appearing in the distance. Relieved and assuming it was Liam, Hannah watched as the car drew nearer, holding her hand up to shelter her eyes from the headlights. It pulled into the top of the driveway, but then abruptly stopped, the engine still running as a figure got out of the driver’s door.

Caught in the beam, she couldn’t actually tell who it was and when the figure didn’t move, unease crept up her spine.

‘Liam? Is that you?’

If it was, he didn’t answer, continuing to stand there, and her unease knotted into concern.

‘Can I help you?’
