‘But they don’t think it was anyone she knew?’
‘The door was unlocked and there were a couple of windows open, so it could have been anyone. Adrian is kicking himself because they had cameras, but they weren’t working. He had been promising Jill he would get them fixed.’
And he was going to feel guilty about that for a long time, Hannah thought, though didn’t say it out loud. Poor bloke.
‘I reminded him about Mrs W’s release and also told him about what’s been happening recently. He’s going to mention it to the police.’
‘You think it’s connected, don’t you?’
‘Honestly, I don’t know, Hannah. Maybe. The timing is a little too coincidental for my liking. I have a private investigator who is doing some digging for me. I’m going to see if I can track Mrs W down.’
‘We don’t know if she’s dangerous, so be careful.’
‘I can take care of myself.’
Hannah didn’t doubt she could. Lauren had always been independent and not afraid to go after what she wanted in life. She had been one of the luckier members of the Hixton Five, and aside from the mouse, she had never experienced what Mrs W was really capable of.
They left the conversation with Lauren promising to keep Hannah updated if she found anything out, while Hannah agreed she would update Rosie, and Lauren would call Tash.
Should she have told Lauren about Liam? So far, Rosie was the only one who knew about him and Hannah felt a little guilty about that. She decided she would tell Lauren and Tash, but she wanted to wait a bit, unsure how they would react if they knew she was both talking to and sleeping with the man writing a book about them.
It didn’t look good.

Hannah tried calling Rosie while she was walking to Lexi Hartman’s house, on her way to see Lexi’s cats, Tango and Cash. The property was about a twenty-minute walk, but it was a pleasant afternoon and Hannah fancied the exercise. When the call went to Rosie’s voicemail, she left a message asking Rosie to give her a quick call back. Rosie had returned to her flat after her landlord had fixed the broken lock, and Hannah had been checking in with her regularly, wanting to make sure she was okay.
Hannah was in Lexi’s kitchen, filling up a bowl with fresh water, when Rosie’s name flashed up on her phone screen, and the tension dropped out of her shoulders.
‘Hey, how’s it going?’ she asked, purposely keeping her tone light.
‘You remember that audition I had for that new police show?’
‘I do.’
‘I’ve had a call-back. They want to see me again.’
‘That’s brilliant news. When is it?’
‘The day after tomorrow. I really want this, Hannah.’
