He looked exasperated, though didn’t say anything as she got up, picking her bag up from the sofa. She expected him to stop her as she opened the door, letting herself out, but he didn’t.

It wasn’t until she had reached her car that she heard his footsteps.

‘Hannah! Wait.’

Ignoring him, she started to open the door. He caught up to her quickly, and she flinched as he touched her elbow.

‘Don’t go.’

No, it would be a mistake staying and she turned to tell him that, finding he was standing much closer to her than she realised. She backed up a step, her bum pushing the door shut. He was still too close, but the tremor in her belly wasn’t from fear.

She looked up at him, certain from his expression that he could feel it too.

For a moment, neither of them spoke, then Liam broke the silence.

‘I’m sorry I accused you of snooping. I’ve had a shitty few days and I’m tired and a little irritable. That’s no excuse. I shouldn’t have taken it out on you.’

He looked so apologetic, the fight went out of Hannah.

‘I’m sorry too. I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions about Jill.’

‘I don’t want to keep secrets from you. If it makes you feel more comfortable seeing exactly what I’m writing about, what notes I am making, I will go through it with you.’

‘No, you don’t have to do that. I don’t need to see.’

‘I want you to learn to trust me, Hannah.’ He reached up and caught a strand of her hair between his fingers, giving it a gentle tug. The move could be read as friendly or more, and she wasn’t quite sure how to interpret it.

When her eyes widened, he let go, backing away a step.

‘Will you come back inside? Please? I’d like you to.’

It was a simple request, but Hannah still took a moment to consider. Something had shifted between them and she would be a liar if she said she wasn’t attracted to this man. But did she trust him?

She nodded. ‘Okay.’

She guessed she was about to find out.

‘Have you found anything yet?’

‘Rosie. Hello to you too.’ Josh’s dry tone irritated like nails on a blackboard and she clenched her free hand into a fist, wishing that she’d had another choice of ally. Hannah kept her circle tight and Rosie and Josh were the two who were closest to her. Which was another reason why Quinn was annoying Rosie so much.

Why was Hannah lowering her defences around him so easily? Rosie didn’t trust him one iota. There was something fishy about the man and with everything going on at the moment, the timing of it all was rather coincidental.
