  72. About Boldwood Books

For now, she silently praised herself for managing to have a good day. One that Rosie was finishing off by cooking Hannah’s favourite meal. Moussaka.

How she wished she had an appetite. Truth was, she had struggled to eat over the last few days, managing just what was necessary. Rosie had gone to so much effort for her though and so she gamely picked her way through the meal.

‘Here, have some more wine. I bought your favourite.’

Hannah didn’t really want any more, could already feel the glass she had drunk had gone to her head, but Rosie was topping up her glass. Hannah noticed her hand was shaking a little.

‘Are you okay?’

Hannah was familiar with Rosie’s brave smile and that was what she was getting now. When her friend’s eyes filled with tears, guilt stabbed at her. She had been so self-absorbed with the attack; she had forgotten that Rosie was suffering too.

‘What’s wrong?’

‘It’s nothing. I just can’t stop thinking about Mrs W. I know she’s still out there, Hannah, and she’s going to come after us. I’m scared.’

Had Mrs W been working with Bill? Hannah honestly didn’t know and she was trying her best not to think about the woman too much. The police had Bill. He was surely the bigger threat. Could Mrs W hurt them without his help?

‘We’re going to be okay. We’re here together and we have each other, right?’

Rosie nodded.

‘The front door is locked and we won’t let anyone in who we don’t trust. We’re safe here, I promise.’ Hannah wasn’t sure she believed her own words, but they were what Rosie needed to hear, and the tension in her shoulders eased a little when Rosie gave her a watery smile.

She needed Rosie to be strong, knowing she couldn’t carry her right now.

‘I’m sorry, Hannah. It’s okay. I’ve got you.’

After clearing away the dishes, Rosie insisted they watch another movie. Hannah was exhausted, but agreed to stay up a little later. She really didn’t fancy the rest of her wine though, pouring the contents of the still nearly full glass down the sink while Rosie was in the loo. She dozed off on the sofa before the film was even halfway through.

‘Come on, sleepyhead. Let’s get you into bed.’

She came to, realised the credits were rolling, and took a moment to remember where she was.

She was so tired, her limbs heavy as Rosie helped her into the bedroom. It was too much effort to go and clean her teeth and she fell onto the bed, let Rosie pull the duvet over her.

It was Tank’s barking that woke her.
