‘Why is he here, Hannah?’ Rosie was aware she sounded petulant, but honestly she didn’t care. Who the hell did Liam Quinn think he was interfering in their lives, and worse still, why was Hannah letting him?

‘Liam gave me a lift.’

‘Have you been talking to him about us, about what happened?’

Rosie could see that Josh’s curiosity was piqued by her question, but Hannah ignored it, instead firing back at her.

‘Where have you been, Rosie?’

‘I had to get away. You know how it is.’

‘I’ve been worried sick about you. You call me telling me that someone has broken into your flat, then you disappear.’

‘I couldn’t stay there.’

‘I get that. But you could have answered your damn phone and let me know you were okay.’

Seriously? Hannah was twisting this back on her?

She could see Josh nodding in agreement, that superior smirk back on his face, while Quinn didn’t seem surprised by anything Hannah was saying, so she’d clearly told him everything that had happened. How dare she do that? She had no right.

‘I’m sorry, okay, but me disappearing for a few days is not as bad as you talking to him.’ Rosie poked her finger in Quinn’s direction. ‘Have you gone crazy, Hannah?’

‘Anyone care to tell me what’s going on?’

Josh wouldn’t be her first choice of ally, but given that Hannah appeared to have lost her mind, Rosie had little choice. ‘Liam is writing a book about Eileen Wickham. He’s been pestering us to talk to him about what happened. Hannah promised me she wouldn’t agree to it.’

‘Rosie!’ Hannah’s tone was angry.

Josh was viewing Quinn through different eyes now, though he kept his tone diplomatic. ‘It pains me to agree with her, but Rosie’s right. Is this really a good idea, Han?’

Quinn said nothing to defend himself, Rosie noted, though he didn’t appear in the least bit bothered that he was being talked about, instead seeming intrigued by the dynamics between the three of them

When Hannah spoke, her irritation was clear. ‘With all due respect, Josh. It’s not really any of your business who I decide to speak to. Not any more.’

Those last words were a low blow and Rosie saw Josh’s expression darken as they sunk in. ‘I guess not,’ he said tightly. ‘I think I should go. Tickets are on the counter. Transfer the money when you get a second.’

Quinn stepped to one side to let him out. ‘Do you want me to leave too?’ he asked Hannah, his tone low.

She shook her head, glaring at Rosie as she answered. ‘No, I want you to stay.’

The words hurt Rosie like a slap. What the fuck was going on with Hannah? She was taking Quinn’s side now? Honestly, this was getting too much.
