  72. About Boldwood Books

She decided to cut straight to the chase. ‘Why didn’t you tell me the profits from the book are going to charity?’

‘You never asked me.’

‘I thought you were cashing in on what happened.’

‘I know.’

‘So why didn’t you correct me?’

‘Would it have made a difference?’

‘Probably not.’ Hannah shoved her fingers back through her hair. ‘I might have considered it.’

‘So you’ve been looking me up online, I guess?’

The question caught her off guard and heat flushed her cheeks. ‘I wasn’t snooping. I was just curious.’

‘Of course. I mean I get it. I really do. We’d spent most of the day together and you were already missing me.’

What?

Hannah must have looked horrified at his insinuation, because he quickly added, ‘I’m teasing you, Hannah.’

There it was again, that appealing lopsided grin. Amusement lighting his eyes.

‘I knew that,’ she insisted, aware they both knew it was bullshit.

There was silence for a moment, though weirdly it didn’t feel uncomfortable. Liam still grinning to himself. Hannah mostly relieved.

‘Have you eaten?’ he asked eventually.

No, Hannah realised she hadn’t. After watching the YouTube video, she hadn’t given a whole lot of thought to food and it was only now he mentioned it that she realised she was hungry.

‘Not yet.’

‘Well, I was going to throw a pizza in the oven. I’m willing to share.’

‘I could eat pizza.’

Liam nodded, picking up her empty Coke can before going through to the kitchen, and it occurred to Hannah she was happy to stay and have dinner with him, when just two days ago she couldn’t bear to be in the same place as the man. When had that changed? She wondered if she should follow, maybe offer to help. It was pizza though. What was she going to do, take the wrapper off?

Instead, she remained where she was, glancing round the room. There was a small dining table behind the sofa where Liam had been sitting. A laptop open and a pile of notes beside it. That must be where he worked.

As curious as she was to know what he had so far, she wouldn’t snoop. Maybe if she spoke to him about what happened, he would offer to show her.

While she waited for him, she pulled out her phone, checked to see if Rosie had been in touch.

She hadn’t, and Hannah tried to push down the bubble of worry. She had just one message. It was from her mother reminding her that she needed to know if she was staying over for the party.

Hannah put her phone away, not in the mood for another discussion about this, and she was frowning when Liam came back through holding two glasses of wine.
