Perhaps the band of tightness across her chest as the farm came into sight should have been a warning, at which point she should have told Liam to stay on the main road and not take the turn-off, but she was too stubborn.
She could work past the fear. She would do this, she had told herself.
Except it turned out she couldn’t, and now she was back at home, beating herself up because she had tried and failed, and she had humiliated herself in the process, showing Liam Quinn that she wasn’t quite as tough as she tried to make out.
To give the man some credit, he hadn’t pushed her, playing down what was essentially a panic attack as if it wasn’t a big deal, understanding she was embarrassed and didn’t want any fuss. And he had been quietly supportive, letting her work through the episode as she tried to pluck up courage to get out of the car, before deciding it was perhaps a step too far. Instead, they drove on, stopping a little further away so Tank could have his walk.
Hannah was beginning to understand that she had misjudged Liam. She still wasn’t happy that he was writing a book about what had happened, hoping to profit from the tragedy, but he had been good to her today and if she was being completely honest with herself, she quite liked his company. She liked his dog too.
Still, she was uncomfortable that he had seen the chink in her armour and when he had dropped her back at her flat, she had decided against inviting him in for coffee, turning down his offer again to help with the dog walking.
Yes, he was okay, but they were on opposing sides over the book. Besides, he would be moving on soon. There was no need for them to form any kind of relationship. Today had simply been about Mrs W and trying to find out what was going on.
Liam had eventually heard back from his friend who confirmed the woman was missing. Hannah didn’t like that one bit, and it only served to exacerbate her worries.
Settled on the sofa with a mug of tea, her twisted ankle raised on cushions, she checked her phone, saw that Rosie still hadn’t been in touch, and tried her again, leaving yet another message.
Then she let Josh know she was home safe.
It had been the right call, telling him where she was going, even if he had tried to talk her out of it. He didn’t understand that she had needed to do this. Plus, he was immediately suspicious of Liam. Hannah had purposely kept the details a little vague, not wanting him to know about Liam’s book. She didn’t need a lecture about that.
