Only one person had ever said those words to her, but it wasn’t possible… was it?
Tears don’t wash with me.
I’m going to give you something to cry about.
No one will ever believe you.
She couldn’t have these flowers in her flat. Getting a bin liner, she dumped the bouquet inside, knotting the bag and opening the front door, shoving it out in the hallway.
She glanced cautiously around the landing, realising they been hand-delivered.
Had Mrs W been here? Did she know where Hannah lived?
The very thought made her shudder and she quickly shut the door, locking it and sliding the latch across. Rosie was convinced Mrs W had been in her flat and now Hannah had received these flowers. Was Mrs W playing some kind of game with them?
She thought of the others – Lauren, Jill, and Tash. Had anything happened to them? Tash maybe, as she still lived in Norfolk. But Jill was in Croydon now and Lauren in Sevenoaks.
Should she check in with them or would they think she was being paranoid?
She decided to WhatsApp them anyway, creating a new group that didn’t include Rosie, not wanting to scare her any further.
Hi all. A couple of unsettling things have happened tonight. There was a break-in at Rosie’s flat and I’ve just received some anonymous flowers with a message: Remember, Hannah. Tears don’t wash with me. There’s only one person I know who’s said that, so not gonna lie, it’s put me a little on edge. Are you all okay? Xx
She quickly followed the message up with a second one.
Oh, and there’s no Rosie on this chat. She’s gone AWOL (spooked by the break-in), so doesn’t know about the flowers. If she contacts anyone, can you let me know please? Xx
She reread the messages. They didn’t make her sound too crazy. She was just checking in with her friends after a couple of odd things had happened. And she had left out the bit about the vandalism, not wanting to be too specific. The music box too. Hannah wasn’t sure if Rosie had heard it or imagined it, so she decided to err on the side of caution.
Lauren was the first to reply.
Sorry to hear what’s happened. Everything is okay here, but thanks for the warning. Make sure you keep your door locked. Just in case. X
Tash was next.
Shit, Hannah. Are you okay? Do you want me to come over?
Then finally Jill.
Just trying to play devil’s advocate. Are you sure both things are connected?
