She had knocked on the door and Jill had let her back in, but she hadn’t been happy, following Rosie upstairs as she hunted for it in the bedroom where she had spent the night. She said so many spiteful things, still furious with Rosie, and when Rosie couldn’t find the bracelet, Jill demanded she leave. Rosie was panic-stricken.

‘I can’t. Not without my bracelet. I know it’s here somewhere. I just have to find it.’

‘You can see it’s not here. You must have left it somewhere else. I need you to leave, Rosie. Now.’

‘Please, just a few more minutes.’

Jill had rolled her eyes. ‘I’m messaging Hannah. I don’t need this crap.’

‘No, you promised.’

‘I never promised anything.’

Jill had her phone out, typing as she had turned to walk away, and desperate, Rosie had reached out to stop her. The next thing she knew, Jill was at the foot of the stairs, her head twisted at an unnatural angle, and Rosie knew before she checked that her old friend didn’t have a pulse.

Initially, she had panicked, knew she had to call the police. It had been an accident. She hadn’t meant it to happen. But what if they didn’t believe her? What if they arrested her? Rosie couldn’t go to prison. She would never cope. Inside were hundreds of Mrs Ws waiting to prey on her. The very thought terrified her.

She had stumbled around Jill’s house, wiping over the surfaces she remembered touching, taking Jill’s phone with her when she left. Although she had called her the previous night on Snapchat and the history shouldn’t show, she was too paranoid to risk it. Instead she dropped the phone in the river that ran through the park close to where Jill lived.

She had sat on the grassy bank for a while, numb with shock as she tried to come to terms with what had happened. She had no idea where she went from here. Did she head back to Norwich and try to pretend none of this had happened?

Not sure she was ready to face that yet, certain her actions would be written all over her face, she had tried to lose herself in shopping, knowing that buying clothes always made her feel better.

This time it didn’t work.

When she had bumped into her ex, Gavin, it had been an easy decision to go with him.

She needed something that would make her feel again. Sex with Gav usually did the trick.

The whole time, Jill’s voice was ringing in her ears, reminding her that she was a screw-up and she needed to get her life back on track.

Jill had no idea.
