  72. About Boldwood Books

Hearing her former name called, Hannah tensed, and as she turned to see who had called her, the moment with Liam was broken.

She spotted the woman crossing the car park, but didn’t recognise her. As she grew closer, there was a spark of remembrance.

‘Nicola?’

‘I wasn’t sure if you would remember me.’

‘You look so different.’

‘In a good way, I hope.’

‘Yeah, in a good way. You look great.’

It wasn’t a lie. Nicola Finch had been a couple of years ahead of Hannah at school and their mothers were good friends. Her long brown hair was now worn in a stylish blonde bob and both her braces and her NHS glasses had gone, while the dress she wore accentuated a figure that she clearly looked after.

‘Thank you. You do too.’

Hannah glanced down at the understated black dress she was wearing. It wasn’t anything special and Nicola was just being kind. Hannah had picked it hoping to fade into the background. Still she thanked her and they spent a little time catching up, as she learnt that Nicola still lived in the village and was now a teacher at the local primary school.

She had introduced her to Liam, who had made small talk for a few moments before disappearing inside to get them both a drink and, as he returned, Nicola was studying him carefully.

‘You know, there’s something really familiar about you,’ she told him, thanking him as he handed over her glass of gin and tonic.

‘Liam’s an author,’ Hannah told her. It was quite possible Nicola had seen him on social media or perhaps read one of his books.

‘No, that’s not it.’ She cocked her head on one side. ‘I’m sure I know you from the past. You’ve been here before, haven’t you? When you were younger.’

Had he? Hannah stared at Liam. His poker face gave nothing away.

‘You must be getting me confused with someone else. It’s my first time here.’ Although his tone was amiable, there was the slightest edge to his words.

Was he telling the truth?

Hannah could tell Nicola wasn’t convinced either, but she didn’t push it, telling Hannah it was lovely to catch up and thanking Liam for the drink again before excusing herself.

Although the moment was over, it stayed with Hannah throughout the rest of the evening and was still on her mind when they returned home at the end of the night.

‘It’s weird how Nicola thought she recognised you earlier.’

‘Is it?’
