Penn turns his gaze on the blond woman, and his neutral expression morphs into a smile. “This is my fiancée, and to answer your question, Zarar has been kicking ass—he’s got the intern thing down to a T. I’m betting if you want, you can twist a job out of Frank, the actual boss, once your internship’s done.”
Zarar extends a hand to the blond lady. “Nice to meet you…”
“Shane,” the woman fills in. She smiles broadly and shakes Zarar’s hand before turning to me. “Who are you? Wow, your outfit is the coolest ever. And your braid is amazing. Wow.” She waves her arms around. “I feel really—” She gestures to her black turtleneck and high-waisted bell-bottom jeans. She’s wearing red lipstick to dress up the whole ensemble. “Underdressed.”
“You look amazing.” Penn watches her with googly eyes.
Siri would approve of her boring outfit.
I reach out my hand. “So nice to meet a fellow lady with a typical dude name. I’m Jamie. James, that is.”
“Amazing.” She beams and hops a little, like an excited rabbit. “Does your name have a story? I always ask my mom Why Shane and she has the most boring answer, she saw it in a baby book and just liked it?”
I snort. “You give off major Energizer bunny vibes and it’s great.”
Penn starts laughing and Shane smacks his arm with the back of her hand. He points from me to Zarar. “Are you two together or—?”
“Not quite,” I start and glance at Zarar.
“First date,” Zarar says.
Mr. Penn directs his attention at Zarar. “Where did you two meet?”
I turn to Shane. “My mom’s a giant loser and named me after a problematic Game of Thrones character. She insists she just likes the name Jamie, and it’s only my middle name that’s Thrones-related, but I don’t buy it.”
Shane hesitates, wide-eyed, like she’s choking on a laugh.
I nod. “Yeah. My middle name’s George.”
She snorts. “I’m so sorry, that’s really funny.”
I grin back at her. “Don’t be, it’s fucking hilarious.” I glance over at Zarar. I missed what he told Penn about us meeting. My eyes flit back to Penn, and my memory suddenly clicks him into place.
I step back, my gaze darting between the two of them. “Holy shit, you’re the ‘Wrecking Ball’ guy!” I point at him accusingly. “And you’re that girl in the video.” I blink dramatically. “Oh my god. I have to take a picture for Dawn. You guys don’t even understand, we watched that video like five thousand times and belted that shit on the bus to school every day!”
Shane’s eyes are about to pop out of her head as she turns to share a stupid grin with Penn.
