Grams interrupts me. “We want you to have your sister trip, have some drama-free fun together. Start in Spain and buy a Europass. Siri, study some fabulous foreign dishes. Jamie, see how your set fares in other areas of the world.”
I shake my head, thunderstruck. “Oh, Grams, I can’t accept this. I don’t want your money.”
Grams puts on her stern face. “James Federov, you will use this Amex. I cannot take it with me. I am not your father, stop trying to defy me.”
Papa nods, a small smile on his face. “We triggered this sister-switch disaster; we feel very responsible for the fallout. We’re old. Let us have this.”
Siri spins to look at me with pure, undiluted joy. I feel so incredibly fucking lucky she rammed her way back into my life.
Epilogue
18 Months Later
SIRI
I’m no longer human as I walk over to Dawn’s. I am a collection of chaotic bees in girl form.
Dawn and I texted consistently the first six months after the switch. Then at least once a week. Then we checked in every couple of months. Now, we haven’t talked since Christmas. It’s March.
I flew out from New York with Jamie and Zarar last night.
It’s exactly 11 a.m. as I knock on the front door.
I blow out a grounding breath as someone pulls it open.
Dawn looks exquisite in an oversized yellow jacket over high-waisted yellow pants and a cropped yellow tank. Her hair is pulled back into an elaborate braid today. I’ve never seen her style it like that. It’s beautiful.
Her mouth pops open. “Siri?”
My cheeks stretch wider than I thought possible. “Hi.”
I’ve left my hair down and tried to curl it. The further I’ve gotten from the dance world, the less I’ve felt the need to tie it back and keep it one color. It’s a kind of reverse ombré now, gray-blond from the roots to around my chin, where it goes pitch-black.
“Hi!” Dawn rushes forward and engulfs me in a hug. I nuzzle a bit into her hair since I can’t wrap my arms properly around her. I’ve got bags in both hands. She pulls away.
“Your hair is stunning! What are you doing here? Are you only here for the day?! Shit, I’m supposed to be hosting a Duck Waterfall meeting all afternoon.”
My face heats. “I actually had Jamie set that up as a decoy so you would be free … you look stunning too. You always do.”
Dawn blinks at me. I’ve been keeping tabs on her through Jamie. She was just hired on for a writer’s assistant job she applied for at a new Netflix show called Upside Down Adulting.
“Is Jamie coming?” Dawn asks tentatively.
I shake my head. “She has plans with Zarar.”
Dawn gapes, hovering in the doorway. “She has plans—?”
