Siri shakes her head from her perch.

“Are you two twins?” Terry asks, her voice strained.

Jamie’s eyes light up. “Ooh, Astute Terr, you’re so perceptive.”

“We’re not twins,” I respond curtly. Jamie is infuriating. And derisive. And rude. My skin feels hot and taut, and I want to scream and keel over and cry. I’ve literally already done all of these things in the last ten minutes. You’d think I’d have gotten it out of my system.

I have to keep it together in front of Terry. But how do you keep functioning when the dream you’ve been building since you could think catches fire and burns down to nothing, and you learn that your mother brainwashed you, and you find yourself stuck in isolation with a sister who apparently threw you away.

Jamie gestures to me. “She’s right, Terr. We’re not twins, just sisters with similar faces. Oh, the joy of being but two short years apart.” She folds her hands in her lap. “We haven’t seen each other in fourteen years because our parents hate each other, but we’ve both found ourselves at your retreat here in the middle of nowhere. I’ve been trying to reconnect, but she doesn’t seem to think that I exist, which is frankly horrifying.” Jamie meets my eyes.

My tears are back. I haven’t been able to staunch them for any considerable amount of time since this morning. Maybe my new life path is to become the first living, breathing human fountain.

Jamie shakes her head, confusion clouding her features. “Siri. Why are you crying? What the hell is going on?”

Terry and Jamie study me expectantly.

“I’m crying,” I huff, “because I spent three years trying to get over the loss of my imaginary friend, Jamie. I was in therapy most of my prepubescent life.

“I spent years trying to figure out how I could have imagined up a human being who lived in my house. A human being who I thought my friends and parents talked to. Who I went to dance with. Years coming to terms with the fact that I was legitimately delusional. Because Mom said you were never real.

“Jamie left the same day Dad did. She was a manifestation of my subconscious that I created to keep me company when I was a child because my parents were so tied up in their own drama. And she’s not real. That’s what Mom’s reiterated to me a hundred times.” My voice is quaking now. “So if you are in fact Jamie, the only two blood family members I know have lied to me my entire life. And you, my sister, abandoned me and never looked back.”
