Me: Jamie and I would like to come and talk to you next weekend. Can you fly us out and make plans to spend the day with us?
Dad: Done. I’ll have my assistant get the tickets and send you over confirmations. When do you want to fly out and what’s your email, Siri?
Me: Friday night, please. Out of EWR. [email protected]. We’d like to fly back here Sunday on the red-eye.
Dad: Looking forward to it, Siri
I check in with Jamie Saturday morning to let her know about Dad. She’s on her way out to Staples when I text her, and she asks me if I want to join.
Jamie is inviting me places with her!
Five minutes later, she pulls up in front of Mom’s house in Papa’s white Honda Accord.
I smile as Jamie rolls down the window. “Pop’s hip is acting up today, so we’re picking him up some groceries on the way home. Hop in, woman.”
At Staples, I help Jamie print pages and pages of words as she fills me in on her plans for the day. After grabbing groceries, we head back to Papa’s together. I help her cut papers and prep for the evening. She makes fun of my precise way of organizing the table while we work, and I am smitten with the growing proof that we are friends. Jamie and I are going to be friends.
Jamie’s trying really hard to be better in all the ways that count, and I am really stupidly proud.

JAMIE
September 12, Saturday
New York City
I stop in at Duane Reade to grab one last thing on my way to the theater. I’m wearing a new pair of overalls I found shopping with Mara yesterday, and I’ve done my eyes up in shades of orange and gold.
It’s 6:50 p.m. when I skitter up to the tiny theater Zarar’s performing in tonight with his acting class. I pay the five bucks for a ticket and make my way to a seat. It’s a small room; there’s only like fifteen people in the audience.
“Jamie!” someone calls as I head toward the front. Penn’s bubbly fiancée is waving at me from the third row. Penn raises a hand in greeting from the seat next to her.
“You’re welcome to sit with us,” he calls.
I shuffle down and scoot into the seat next to Shane. “Can you guys watch my stuff while I go do some recon? I want to figure out where the actors come out after the show.”
“Of course.” Shane grins.
