“… You made me feel like cutting them out was okay. That it was more than okay, that I deserved my own separate life so I could follow my own ever-important dreams. And yeah, having dreams and goals are important and great, but some things have to be more important. Moms. Sisters. Daughters. Family, Dad. You don’t cut off your people so that you can fly. You find a way to bring them with you. To make it work. And if you can’t make it work with them in the picture, you choose them, not the dream.
“You chose your dream over your daughter, Dad. Can you see that? Do you understand that? You and Mom both.
“I am so messed up. I chase things, and I leave people bruised and broken along the way. That’s how you’ve molded me. And I hate it.
“I’m going to evolve if it’s the last goddamn thing I do. I’d like to open that opportunity to you too. Take it or leave it.
“If you leave it, then I’m not going to be able to be around much. And I hate that, because I love you. But I can’t erase all this. I see you and I feel like I’m being controlled. You use me when you need me. You push me to look a certain way.” I shrug. “I need to make my own decisions and live my own life, and I need you to be okay with that. We need you to love and support us and do it for free. And I know you think you already do. You’re wrong.”
I gesture to Siri. “Exhibit fucking A.” I take a breath. “You can’t blow this off as a one-and-done fix. You need to do the work. It’ll take time, and it’ll be inconvenient for you. But I need you to do it anyway.”
Water drips down onto my boobs. I’m crying. Dad’s crying too. So much crying. I don’t want to cry again for at least another ten years. “Siri, get those damn pancakes going, please.”

JAMIE
September 26, Saturday
New York City
Z and I have been practicing every day for the past six days. He interrupts me. He fake-laughs. He throws me off. Jeers. He’s brought me into QCZ when no one was around so I could practice on the stage. We’ve had Dawn on FaceTime three times, jeering along with him. I’ve done it sitting, standing, dancing, and lying flat on my back.
They’ve both given me three rounds of feedback on three different versions of this new ten-minute set.
I’m on in five minutes.
