I have to grind my teeth together to keep my lips from wobbling. Jamie’s so lucky to have a best friend who says stuff like this. She sounds like family. Like a true sister.
“Jamie, can you promise me, please?” She continues, “Tell me exactly what happened to make you go along with this whole retreat thing after I share my dating app saga? We don’t have to do it here out in the open, but when we get back to your place, okay? And I’ll give you full permission to milk any of these dates for set material.” Dawn smiles knowingly.
How do I promise to tell her something I don’t even know? How do I not promise her? How would I even go about telling her I’m not actually Jamie? When will I stop looking like Jamie?!
I do not have time to go down this mental rabbit hole right now.
“Okay,” I whisper.
The tension ebbs from her face. “Thank the gods!” She chuckles. “Okay, hit me with the Q’s I know you were compiling during that speech.”
I try to grin smugly like Jamie does. “Well, for starters, what app were you using?”
“Pizza Perfect.”
“Pizza Perfect?!” I squeak. “What? That’s not a real thing.”
“It really, really is. There’s a dating app for pizza lovers. I just had to use the Google and thar she was!” Dawn pulls on an exaggerated English accent. “Prettie as a pictcha.”
I snort. Note to self: Dawn loves pizza.
“The whole gimmick is pizza-related,” she continues. “You put your favorite topping in your profile and then you grab pizza together for the first date.”
“You had pizza four times last week?”
“Living my best pizza life, Jame.” She leans back and puts her hands behind her head.
I wonder what her favorite topping is. I’ve never tried making pizza, but it can’t be difficult. I’ve made way more complicated dishes. I’ll google some recipes later.
“So how … did the dates go?” I ask. I want to ask more about pizza and her specific preferences, but Jamie has to be aware of that sort of information.
Dawn examines her fingertips (they’re a pale pastel blue color). “Well, the first girl—”
Dawn likes girls!
“—was a gorgeous redhead, favorite topping, ham, which is fine, but something about the way she talked about people … it reminded me of Dani. And then she went and backhand complimented my nails.
