“Because you’re mad at her,” Dawn fills in with a smile. She nods to the pot. “How much longer we got on that?”
I put the top on the sauce. “It’s done, but it’s gonna be thirty more minutes before we can roll the dough and put the pizza together.”
“Okay, want to sit down?”
We pad over to the kitchen table. Dawn brings my untouched wine over with her own. She shifts her chair toward mine and holds her glass aloft. “To Jamie, for bringing this hang together.”
I pick up my glass. “To Jamie.” Dawn takes a sip of hers and watches me expectantly.
I brave a small sip and immediately spit it back into the glass, sticking my tongue out and closing my right eye in a weird spasm. “Oh wow, Dawn, that’s disgusting.”
Dawn’s laughing. “Thank you. I’ll treasure that hot take forever.”
“So, this news my dad shared.”
She nods. “Yeah?”
“Um.” I swirl the wine for a moment before meeting Dawn’s eyes. “My dad booked Jamie a stand-up gig at a party Timothée Chalamet is throwing tomorrow. And Jamie and I aren’t switching back till Tuesday. Do you think we could go on as Duck Waterfall?”
Dawn’s face goes slack. Her brain takes five seconds to reboot before she explodes into action, rising abruptly from the kitchen chair.
“Are you kidding me? A gig at Timothée Chalamet’s house?! Siri! We need to get you into improv express training right now if we’re going to perform for Timothée fucking intercoursing Chalamet tomorrow! Cancel all your plans.”
I snort. “I don’t have any plans.”
She glances at the clock. “We still have twenty minutes before pizza rolling, let’s go upstairs. I have to get dressed if we’re going to be working tonight. I can’t teach in a robe! Timothée Chalamet! Get up, hurry!”
Dawn’s in her closet. I’m waiting on her pastel rainbow-striped comforter. Her room is amazing. Each wall is painted a different pastel color and she’s decorated them with artsy pictures of ice cream. Coming in here was like walking into a dream cloud.
Dawn gave me her iPhone to play with while she gets dressed, so I spend a second scrolling through Bran and Celia’s Instagram feeds. I stop on Celia’s newest picture. Bran and Celia selfie-ing at the top of the Empire State Building. Bran is kissing Celia, and Celia’s eyes are slightly open, looking sideways at the camera.
