  83. DANNY WOULD LIKE TO THANK

At first, I click away, wishing the internet wasn't like this, jam-packed full of people throwing out highly charged opinions they don't really hold in the real world, making themselves more pompous and opinionated on-line. They're just showing off, I tell myself, and being anonymous helps, too. Who are these people who post nasty things anonymously, or make up names and leave dodgy comments? They're angry souls, or teenage girls, pointlessly squabbling about celebrities.

And then I click back one more time, and I notice that this has not been posted anonymously. It is not an angry soul, or a teenage girl.

It is a bishop.

A bishop! An ordained or consecrated member of the Christian clergy! A member of society entrusted with a position of authority and oversight! A potential pope!

What's a potential pope doing listening to my friend in the shower? Why's he writing not very nice things on his blog? Why would he do that? Are bishops not busy enough, doing the things that bishops do? Is this bishop, as a practising friend of Jesus, merely passing on the son of God's opinions about my pal? Do all bishops feel this way?

And can I really raise a child in a world where all bishops feel this way?

I want to phone my friend and console him, but how do you do that? What do you say? 'I'm sorry to hear that you're not popular with bishops'? But what if that affected his broadcasting? What if every time he opened his mouth to talk about foxhunting or a new survey about Britain's favourite fruit, he was distracted by the fact that somewhere in Britain, a big-hatted bishop was furiously slamming his fists down on his breakfast table, or making sarcastic comments about him to Mrs Bishop, or drawing silly pictures of him and holding them up at sermons?

I cannot tell him.

So I do what a friend would do. I make up a name and post on the blog.

'Hello Bishop,' I start. 'Your comments about ******* aren't very Christian.'

I think for a second, and tap my chin, and work out how to finish.

'But I forgive you.'

I feel the bishop will like this. I am showing the understanding and humanity he will doubtless approve of. I click 'Post' and feel instantly better. I have said my piece. I can move on with my life.

But now I start to worry. I have contradicted a bishop. He was only giving his opinion. And the rest of his blog was very good. It was forward-thinking, and personable, and just the way the church should be. I start to worry that I have jeopardised any chance I would have had of finally attaining a sainthood. What if he sets a pack of priests on me?
