- Wahida Clark on Mental and Behavioral Health
I got through the next couple of hours in a daze. I felt as if I was about to fall out. He took Kaeerah upstairs and they said their goodbyes. He came back downstairs and into the kitchen where I was starting the dishwasher. He eased up behind me, wrapped his arms around my waist, and kissed me on the cheek.
“You’re taking really good care of our daughter. She’s very happy. Thank you. I’m going to get up outta here. I love the both of you.”
With that, he was gone.
FAHEEM
I really needed that time with my family. Here it was forty-eight hours later and that visit and sexing was fresh on my mind when Jaz called me.
“Faheem.” Jaz was crying. “I’m headed to the hospital. I’ve been bleeding clots and cramping to the point that I’m doubling over.”
“What? Where are you now?”
“Angel is texting you the address. She’s taking me to the hospital.”
I was in Jersey City when I got the call. I called Angel, but she didn’t answer. Finally, the text came through. I made a wild U-turn and high tailed it to the hospital.
* * *
“Jaz, what’s the matter? What is the doctor saying?” I asked before I even got into her room good.
“Hey, Faheem.” Angel gave me a hug and then left the room.
“I don’t know what happened,” Jaz sputtered, helplessly. “I had a reaction to the pills.”
“Pills? What pills?”
“The birth control pills.”
When Jaz said birth control pills, I felt as if I had been kicked in the balls. I don’t think she meant to say it. I think it slipped out because she panicked. I had been thinking we both were on the same page, and these last four months or so, I’d been trying to get her pregnant. I thought we both wanted to be pregnant.
Jaz started crying. “I’m sorry, baby, but I felt the time wasn’t right.”
“Jaz, what the fuck are you saying?”
It turned out that Jaz had been about five weeks pregnant. A reaction to some birth control pills brought on the hemorrhaging which led to a miscarriage. The doctor gave her a D&C and said she would be discharged in the morning. I was livid, but this was not the best time to express my anger.
