“I’m still waiting on the final word of who was behind the incident at your home. Don’t worry about your home or your families, I will handle it. I just need you two to do what you do. But do it even better in Beijing.” He laughed. “I told them that I am sending my best for this assignment. No doubt in my mind about that, and I know you won’t let me down,” the Don told us as we were leaving. “I will make sure your families are protected, and I will see to it that you are protected while you’re in China. I have my allies there,” he assured us. “You may be skeptical now, but you will be able to set up your own operations. This assignment will be very lucrative for us all and I promise you will be legit and set for life.”
I still wasn’t convinced or excited about this trip. The timing was all off.
Chapter Twenty-Two
TASHA
My whole life had been turned upside down, yet again. We had to move to Sag Harbor in the Hamptons, which was a nice vacationing spot in and of itself, but why did it have to be under these circumstances? We were in hiding and had bodyguards outside our house around the clock. This was a new one for me. And our men were gone to got-damn China!
Angel was pissed off that she couldn’t go to her office until Kay got back. They had to trust their new office manager to run things, and it was running her crazy to give up control. She was definitely a career woman. All day she was texting and talking to her office. She was like the Energizer Bunny. I’d never seen her in this light. I was amazed, and I saw why Kaylin treated her like a queen and loved her to death. But she still had too much damn energy for me.
To pass time while I was stuck in the bed, I stayed online with my tablet or my iPhone. I hadn’t checked Mari’s Facebook page in a while, so I went to see what she had going one. Today, she posted that she was adopting a little girl soon. Who would give this nut a baby? I felt a twinge—that old gut-wrenching feeling I got when things were not quite right. Something was yanking at my spirit. Maybe it was those tapes. Those damn therapy sessions. I swear, I wished Trae hadn’t even opened the envelope. That envelope had a curse on it.
But now Trae wasn’t here. And some weird shit was going on, and it seemed as if it had something to do with my baby. And that scared the hell out of me.
