- Wahida Clark on Mental and Behavioral Health
There were about ten suited businessmen in the meeting, including Trae and me. They did not look like the Chinese Triad you read about or watched on TV. They all looked like white-collar businessmen—legitimate businessmen.
“We have been using this cryptocracy form of banking for years. This is a system that can’t be traced. Just recently the Chinese government has begun talks of licensing it, but I can assure you gentlemen, if we iron out the details, we can beat them to the punch. No one owns bitcoin yet. That’s why we’re sitting in this room, today, gentlemen.”
Fuck me! The Don wants to own bitcoin? Me and Trae exchanged eye contact at that statement. However, the Don didn’t need us for this. I needed to brace myself for what was coming next. This trip wasn’t all about bitcoin. Was Don was fucking us over. But why? And for what?
Chapter Twenty-Four
RICK
“How’s the baby this morning?” I asked Nina, kissing her on her neck. She was sitting in a rocking chair breastfeeding my son, who looked nice and greedy, sucking away. That little boy was smacking and holding on to her breast with one hand, while he constantly kicked his feet. Must be good.
“Very hungry,” Nina said, filled with content.
We had made up since Rick Jr. had gotten through his medical crisis. He was in the hospital for almost two weeks. Plus, she was glad that Kyra had gone back to New York; she seemed perfectly happy—for now.
She had no idea that I would be going back to New York to be with Kyra when she delivered Destiny. There had been a long stretch of peace, so I decided not to break the news to her until just before it was time to leave.
Nina smiled. “Our son is fine. Why can’t we stay like this always?” She was referring to how peaceful things had been around our house.
“Yeah, you like what I put on you last night, huh?”
Nina blushed. “That, too. I just want us to be like we are now. Always. Our baby is healthy; we are good financially. All the kids are happy. Promise we will stay this way.”
I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t promise that. My thoughts went to the text I’d received from Kay. He wanted me to pull out the information I had kept for them. That same piece of information that made Mr. Li back off. With Kay and Trae both in China, Kay’s house getting shot up and all the women in hiding, it sounded like we were in a little over our heads.
ANGEL
“Angel, it’s raining too hard,” Aunt Marva said, wringing her hands. “I can’t drive in the rain.” She began praying out loud. “Lord, help us to get this baby to a hospital safely. Amen.”
