TRAE
“Lock Down! Code four on the yard! Code four on the yard!” the loudspeaker blared, filling the prison corridor with static and tension as a twelve-man team of riot control officers stormed toward the prison yard.
“Down! Down! Everybody on the ground now! Down on the fuckin’ ground now!” bellowed the riot control sergeant as he entered the yard.
His team had every inmate on their bellies, hands locked behind their backs. He approached the weight pile where three nurses were gathered around a black inmate sprawled out on the ground in a pool of his own blood.
“If it were up to me, I’d let the bastard bleed to death,” the sergeant grumbled to the officer sprinting beside him. The captain was standing next to the head nurse when the sergeant arrived.
“Captain Murphy, what do we have here?” the sergeant questioned.
Murphy shook his head. “The usual bullshit. But we probably would have lost him if we didn’t get here when we did. The nurses are stabilizing him for transport to the outside.”
“That bad?”
“Could’ve been worse.”
“Matter of opinion,” the sergeant chuckled, but when the captain didn’t crack a smile, he covered the chuckle with a cough and asked, “Who’s the vic this time? Somebody on our radar?”
“That’s the not so exciting part. It was Mr. Big Time himself,” the captain replied.
The sergeant’s eyes widened. He already knew who the captain was talking about. They were just discussing the pull that this inmate held. “Macklin?” The sergeant confirmed.
The captain nodded.
“Knew it was only a matter of time. If we don’t move fast, we’re not asking, we are begging for a got-damn bloodbath!”
I gasped for air as I jumped up from the hard, cement like pad they called a mattress in the shit hole cell I was confined to. I was sweating bullets as I tried to shake off the fucked-up dream I’d just had. Fuck! Ever since I found out about my early release, I had been having weird ass dreams about getting hit. I was starting to think the shit was a sign, some type of warning that something bad was going to happen. I knew Mr. Li using his powerful connections played a major role in my early release, but damn! I didn’t want to acknowledge that we had made a deal with the devil himself.
