- Wahida Clark on Mental and Behavioral Health
After twenty-four hours, I realized we were being detained. I hadn’t kept my word because I had to go back and forth to California to get Trae out of jail and to get Tasha and the kids to New York. Obviously, Mr. Li didn’t keep his word that he would leave our families and us alone. The Don had been right. There had been a price on our heads. But now it looked as if Don Carlos had handed us to Mr. Li on a silver platter. I hated it when Red was right.
“It’s not funny, Kaylin. I’m not feeling this trip.” She told me. “And you are not listening to me. I’m scared.”
“Red, come on, yo. Scared of what? I’m going to be good. I will be back with you before you know it.”
“Baby I went online and looked up Beijing and my heart dropped. China is the so-called People’s Republic, but it is a Communist country. Our Black men don’t have rights here in the states. With all the wholesale killing of Black men, and the police always getting away with it; what chance do you have in China if something goes wrong?
Chapter Twenty-Eight

I kept thinking back to that night when Faheem came by the house. I went over every word he said in our conversation. I remembered every detail. What really endeared me to him was while I was on the phone negotiating and Carlito woke up and started crying. I was headed to get my baby, when Faheem halted me by holding up his hand.
Surprisingly, Faheem went in the bedroom and scooped Carlito up, brought him back into the living room and soothed him, walking him back and forth while I talked business. My baby fell back to sleep quickly. He took Carlito back into his bedroom, and then returned to the living room. That meant everything to me and I could see where Kevin got it from. This man was not only the leader of his crew, he was a husband and a father. His wife sure was one lucky chick. I wonder if he creeps around on her? If not, I would damn sure persuade him to.
I ended my call. “We are in!” I raised my hand and gave Faheem a high-five. One of those types of high-fives you give when your point guard scored that dunk. “They are calling us back with the meeting place and time. Damn, I’ma boss! If I had you on my team a few years ago, I’d probably be retired by now.”
Faheem gave that smile. “I see a lot of me in you, Seven. We never retire. We may take a breather, but retire? Never. What’s your story? Why are you doing this? You have a son. A legit business. Are you sure you are ready to take this risk?
