  43. Wahida Clark on Mental and Behavioral Health

Although I didn’t give birth to Lil’ Faheem, I mourned for him because he was the child of the man I loved. I knew it hurt him. And when he was hurting, I was hurting. I would catch him every now and then glaring off into space. And other times, he would pick up his Qur’an and read for hours non-stop. Those were the times that I think he would reflect on his son the most. Faheem’s parents had been Muslim, and they had raised him as one. Even though he ventured to the dark side, he never stopped praying and praising his God.

When Kaeerah asked him how long she was supposed to feel sad that her brother wasn’t coming back, he simply told her, “Until you choose to be happy. No one comes in this world or leaves without Allah’s permission, so stop feeling sad.”

He told Kaeerah that Allah would bless her with another baby brother, and he looked over at me and winked. That’s when I got up and walked out of the room. I wasn’t sure if I was ready for another child yet. Hell, I wasn’t ready for another child at all.

I was super excited because Tasha and Jaz were back on the East Coast. I took two weeks off from the record label that Kaylin and I owned. My girls needed me, and I needed them just as much. I wanted to spend time with them; plus, the children needed to be together. Jahara and Aisha are seven. Kaeerah is eight. Tasha’s twins, Kareem and Shaheem, are almost seven and Caliph is five. Kaylin’s oldest, Malik, is eleven. We called them the Wrecking Crew. I remembered when we were all single with no kids, now we were coming up on a small village. With both Tasha and Kyra being seven months pregnant, I wanted to bless them with a ton of goodies for the new babies. They both were in funky moods, protesting my baby shower every step of the way. But it was too bad. We needed something other than our normal drama to come together for; something fun. Hell, I was going all out. And so far, my family gathering/baby shower was coming together flawlessly.

I shouldn’t have invited Rick, and I promised Kyra that I wouldn’t, but I did. She told me the only way she would come was if I didn’t invite him. But of course, my hardheaded ass didn’t listen. I just hoped it wouldn’t blow up in my face.
