Chapter Fifty-Eight
Ryan
Ryan cannot see. He cannot speak.
But he can hear.
He’s been listening to the rhythmic drip-drip-drip for what seems like hours, days even. He wonders if a tap has been left on or if it’s raining. It could be sunny or stormy, day or night, he has no way of knowing.
Drip.
Drip.
Drip.
He remembers Tyler telling him and Connor about water torture. There was this experiment where water was dripped onto a victim’s forehead with an intent to wear away the skin, the brain, to cause death.
It didn’t work.
But he remembers what came after, when they randomized the fall of the drops creating an inconsistent pattern. This induced a psychotic break in less than twenty hours.
He wonders if that would have been the case if the victim could have only heard them rather than felt them. If, left for long enough, he’ll eventually go insane.
Drip.
Drip.
Drip.
Ryan’s body begins to shake with a silent laugh.
He’s already going mad.
And then he’s shaking with sobs he can’t release.
Drip.
Drip.
Drip.
He doesn’t know how much more he can take.
Chapter Fifty-Nine
Connor
Connor leaves the warmth of Hailey’s room. Shivers as he reaches the kitchen.
Mr Marshall is sipping tea from a mug with ‘World’s Best Dad’ written on it. Connor doesn’t want to face this broken man and tell him what really happened to his daughter, but he tells himself that he can.
He must.
There’s an empty chair opposite Mr Marshall – Hailey’s chair – and Connor slides onto it, uninvited. What he has to say won’t be quick and nerves have turned his knees to rubber. Mr Marshall takes another sip of his drink and Connor sees the tremor of his hand.
‘Is Hailey—’
‘No questions.’ The dulcet tone Mr Marshall had used in front of Hailey has vanished. ‘It’s time for answers.’
Connor’s throat is dry but he isn’t offered a drink. He closes his eyes, travelling back to that night. The memories good and bad tumble into the forefront of his mind and Connor is unsure where to start so he begins at the only place he can.
The first dare.
Mr Marshall doesn’t speak. Doesn’t react as Connor relays Tyler’s and Ryan’s dare. Then Connor falteringly speaks of his own experience, of Hailey braving the freezing water to save him, of his fear when she disappeared under the water, his desperation as he tried to find her. The relief when she broke free of the surface coughing and spluttering and he realized she was okay.
Then she was okay…
