‘Okay,’ I replied, because you would, wouldn’t you? You’d never expect something as innocuous as an envelope dropping onto the doormat to be so dangerous.

So damaging.

Chapter Thirty-Five

Connor

The envelope isn’t addressed to anyone. Assuming it’s junk, Connor tears it open.

AN EYE FOR AN EYE.

The world begins to spin.

‘Connor?’ Kieron calls from the top of the stairs. ‘Connor, can we play—’

‘Shut. Up.’ Connor shouts.

There’s anger in his voice. He swallows hard. He never usually speaks to Kieron like that but he doesn’t know how much more he can take.

Someone knows.

Hysteria beats furiously in his chest.

They had come for Tyler.

Ryan.

They were coming for him.

Chapter Thirty-Six

Lucy

‘Why did you shout at Kieron?’ I rush into the hallway. Notice that Connor is holding a piece of paper. ‘What is it?’

Connor doesn’t answer so I pluck the letter from his fingertips. My face freezes as I read the words.

AN EYE FOR AN EYE.

‘How ridiculous.’ My voice is tense. ‘It must be from some religious group.’

Hold it together.

I make a show out of screwing it up, dropping it into the bin in the kitchen. I begin to load the dishwasher. My hand is trembling so much a glass slips through my fingers and shatters against the floor. I pick up a shard but it nicks my skin. I wince. Blood drips onto my T-shirt.

Hold it together.

‘Connor, can you—’

‘No,’ He snaps. His earlier fragility has been replaced with a hard shell. I understand that he is exhausted, on edge, but I want to yell back at him that he isn’t the only one with problems. Instead, I fetch the dustpan and brush and crouch down again, sweeping up the mess. It’s a relief not to be standing. My scared, shaking legs no longer capable of supporting me.

But I have to act as though I believe the letter is not aimed at us.

Aimed at me.

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Aidan

The local station is drifting from the speakers, the drive-time presenters discussing the news.

‘So what are our thoughts on “The Taken”, as the evening paper has dubbed them? Tweet us using #TheTaken.’

Aidan swerves off the road, tyres bumping over the grass verge. He slams his foot on the brake and sits, his foot pushing against the pedal, his fingers clenched around the steering wheel. His whole body rigid.

‘It’s shocking that two teenage boys from our town have gone missing, isn’t it, Steve? @Dps1978_1 says “worried to let my own kids out”. If I was a parent I’d feel the same.’

‘I can tell you, Helen, my kids have all grown and you never stop worrying about them. Here’s another tweet from @Lgray591: “2 of the 3 boys were involved in the tragedy at Penton Outwards Bounds Centre. Coincidence?”’
