- About the Publisher
But my sense of courage pales in comparison to the fear I feel. My mind and my body detach from one another as I drive. I break away from myself, floating high above the car, watching the mother rush to save her son with a fierce determination on her face.
I can do this.
I can do this.
I can do this.
My heart hammers out a frenzied rhythm keeping beat with my words.
I can do this.
But I don’t know if I can.
Chapter Forty-Six
Connor
The grey sky is momentarily brightened by a whip of lightning.
‘Get out of the car.’ The voice that had once spoken to him in kindness now growls with fury.
‘Please.’ Connor isn’t too proud to beg. ‘Please can we just go home? Talk about it there? Mum will—’
‘Out.’ One word, a thousand undercurrents of what might happen if Connor doesn’t comply ripple through Connor’s body – now, more than ever, he is terrified for Tyler and Ryan. He can’t coordinate his limbs. It’s an effort to rise to sitting. He wonders why he isn’t being dragged out of the boot, the way he was forced in.
The calm before the storm, but the storm is already raging around him, rain lashing.
Connor wiggles his pins-and-needles toes and stretches out his hands, his fingers on cold metal.
The wrench.
Connor closes his hand around it and raises his head, stares into cold, angry eyes. Can he use it as a weapon? Should he? He imagines raising it high, springing forward. The crack of a skull. The crumple of knees. Blood spilling on the pavement.
He has hesitated too long. The wrench is spotted and torn from his grasp. Connor is disappointed but, more than that, relieved. He doesn’t have it in him to hurt someone. Not purposefully anyway.
Connor swings his left leg out of the boot, his right, feet splashing in puddles as he glances around him; unbidden, his head gives a slight nod as he realizes where he is. The only surprise is that it has taken until now to get here. The building looks almost derelict, practically falling down, but it’s as though it has been holding on until he arrived. Its windows are blank, soulless eyes watching him on his slow descent. He is biding his time, praying for an unlikely passer-by, someone, anyone who will see a boy climbing out of a boot and ask questions, but it is isolated here around the back, and besides, the foul weather will be keeping everyone indoors.
